Incredible Connection offers free ADSL data

Well, it is better than nothing. But how is 13Gigs worth R2500?

Edit: I see, it is an extra 13Gigs extra
 
Pffft... should invest some of the "free" ADSL funds into getting their website worked on.... it is awful to use or try and find something... eeeew.

R1500 for 39GB, that's like R38.46/gb

I want at least 1 year uncapped unshaped data on a 384 line for R1500(data only).
 
“Customers that buy a computer for less than R6 000 from Incredible Connection from the middle of November 2010, will, as part of their purchase, be given a FREE 39GB ADSL data voucher worth R1 500 for Incredible Connect,” explains Miller.

“If they spend more on a computer, anywhere between R6 000 and R10 000 the value of the voucher will climb to R2 000, giving them 52GB of ADSL data. Buying a computer of more than R10 000 in value, will see them receiving a R2 500 voucher, giving them 65GB of ADSL data to use,” says Miller.

This sounded too good to be true, so the skeptic in me went about investigating:

39GB at R1500 = R38.46 per GB
52GB at R2000 = R38.46 per GB
65GB at R2500 = R38.46 per GB

Compare this to other offerings in the market:

39 GB = R1500 - Incredible Connection (R38.46 per GB, but is this like prepaid?)
39 GB = R741 - Axxess Lite (R19 per GB)
50 GB = R475 - Afrihost Gold Package (R9.50 per GB)
39 GB = R1521 - Afrihost prepaid (R39 per GB)

The Axxess Lite and Afrihost Gold packages are month-to-month packages, and the data expires at the end of each month.

Based on the wording in this article, it appears that IC's data bundles function like prepaid bundles that don't expire after a month. That said, R39 per GB is a good benchmark to use, and is the same as Afrihost's prepaid pricing. So when they claim that you are getting a data bundle for worth R1500 for free, they really do mean it (unless my assumption of this being a prepaid bundle is wrong).

Last remaining question, how is IC funding this, besides their already exorbitant pricing? What's the catch? Have they increased the prices on their laptops, or not passed on savings from the strong Rand/Dollar exchange rate? Or are they taking a longer term view to all this?

All said, this is still pretty innovative from IC, and will help to drive ADSL penetration, reduce pricing (WebAfrica - still R69 per GB for prepaid? C'mon! Get with the times!!)

Didn't think I'd ever be saying this, but well done to IC.

Remember a couple of things, firstly, it doesn't cost them R39/GB, it costs them a fair bit less. Secondly, Incredible Connection's market is naive Joe Public, many of whom probably aren't going to use much of the data (since nobody in the technical community, or anyone who has any clue about computers, buys their computers from Incredible Connection). Finally there is a small subsidized portion from marketing, as the idea is that this should lead to additional sales. Combine those together and it seems quite do-able to me.
 
Well. What can I say? I'll be buying my laptop +-R6k there instead of my first choice - Hi-Fi Corp. or Game.
 
Isn't it a law in South Africa that published article must state if the article was sponsored by the company mentioned? Because this article was definitely paid for by IC.

If not, what a utter crap news.
