Hi friends

My home pc suddenly wouldn't boot up yesterday. no power, lights fans , nothing. When I got home, i unplugged the system, opened the case, let it air for about an hour and tried again. Humidity here was very high yesterday. I live virtually on the beach. My tv also had similar problems but came right towards the evening.
eventually my pc came on but stuck on bios screen. i shorted the bios jumper and restarted and ran cmos setup as required. as soon as i restart however the bios locks again. shorted bios again and this time i chose the option of load "defaults" at startup and i was able to boot into windows and system worked fine while i was in windows.
As soon as i shut down/ restart, I get a warning of cpu fan error/ new cpu installed error/ over voltage error and the system locks up asking me to run setup. However pressing delete at startup refuses entry to cmos setup. I have to short the bios again and retry from the beginning.

my specs

asus p5q
3gig ram
bfg gtx 280
ocz gamer exteme psu 700w
intel Q9550
a few hdd 1 x 1,5 TB, 1X 500G SATA, 1 X 250G IDE
s/b xfi pci
kworld tv card pci

WIN7 ULT 32bit

at 1.00 am last night, i quit trying:mad:

your use of caps lock is freaking us out :erm:

sorry. just venting...

if you know basic pc tech (which it seems you do). i would plug out everything except what the pc needs to actually just start up and see if you can at least enter bios or get up to the point where it says no hdd. (cpu + ram). if this works then the next hdd and so on. this might tell you if a device is causing it.

do you get any beeps ?

will try as suggested when i get home. no beeps thus far. as the bios screen loads, all devices are detected ie. ram hdd , usb etc. as it comes to cpu, it says to redo setup because new cpu is installed.
just as an after thought , using my ps2 kb actually took the system to this point. if i plugged in my usb kb, system hangs at bios boot screen even before the above stats.

as per my OP, if i choose default setup, i can actually get into windows and everything works but cannot restart thereafter.

Same here, wifes pc just stopped working.
Its a piece of crap, so not too worried, just the data is fairly important.
I assume its probably the power supply that just went poof.

+1 yep... that would be my guess as well. Replace the Power Supply. In fact... at the coast, I suggest you replace the power supplies on an annual basis.

mine is reversed. home/ gaming pc so data not that critical, but built myself a year ago so not crap which is why i am battling to fix.:)

My PC's also used to refuse to start up on most humid mornings.
I have replaced all the power supplies with more expensive ones, (A-Open), and that solved the problem.

The problem of the BIOS resetting and it telling me to go into the configuration because the CPU has been changed is a constant problem with my one cheapie machine, I just choose optimal settings every time. I don't have a clue how to fix it, though some people have said that I should replace the cmos battery, but I tested the battery and it's fine.

My one screen takes about 15 minutes before it's focus comes back in line and I can actually read it, it's hinting that I should buy nice LCD screen. :D

yes, yours. sounds like its shot, over voltage etc, normally from an erratic power supply.

but if i choose default boot values system starts fine. it's only if i go into bios setup and try and change anything or when i restart that i have the problem.

Strange one this. It sounds like the humidity is a factor, like there's moisture causing an unwanted connection on your motherboard or between pins of the BIOS/CMOS chip or the CPU. Just an idea here - why not put a whole lot of those silica gel packets you always get with electronic equipment into your PC case to try and dry out the air a bit? Another thing you can try is to take the TV card out and try booting without it - I've had endless hassles with more than one of those things. Hope it comes right for you..

I live also near the coast, had problems with humidity. I got silica packs and never had problems again. I put them into the dvd recorder, tv, basically everything electronic.

Yup. PSU issues here to. Now I just buy those R350 Gigabyte Odin jobbies. They work for about 2 years and then I replace it. Damn annoying I tell you.

After spending R1000 on a Thermaltake PSU and that decided to give way, I refuse to spend that again on a PSU. Thought Thermaltake was good :/ And no, they didn't even reply to my emails.

update: tried a brand new psu at a tech shop and still same problem. left pc with them to try and trouble shoot problem.
silicon idea seems good. just too lazy to implement although it had been suggested to me before.

Never had a board die on me. Ever. Only PSU and RAM.

Intel CPU's are strong like Ox :D *touch wood again*

Try Proline computers. They have Intel CPUs but the board packs up. On various computers I've lost main board, serial port packed up, RAM vrekked, USB port died, etc. They are entry level PCs and they run 24/7 so maybe it's to be expected.
