Hi guys

It's time to upgrade the laptop. I'm replacing a HP DV9293EA. Must say lugging around a 17" laptop never proved very convenient for me, neither was the 2 hour, if you lucky, battery life I could get out of the thing. Over the years it proved to be anything but reliable with 2 significant breakdowns, both repaired under warranty, where mobo, cpu and gpu's were replaced.

My budget for the replacement is R10k absolute max, not a cent more. I like the idea of getting a Dell as I've mostly heard good things about the brand, the after sales service and the quality of the product.

My mind is pretty much set on this one unless of course someone on here can make a compelling argument for something else.

The unit will not be used for anything other than light gaming, heavy web browsing and extensive use of the Office suite of products so a R10k machine is more than ample.

Any suggestions/comments/feedback??

Not really, hey.

There is a broad spectrum or processors in the lineup and theoretically it will yield better bang for buck across the price/performance range.

Of course it will also hold its value longer as it will be current generation.

I would also wait just a little longer for SB if your laptop is not broken...

Started a thread on getting a new laptop.

This laptop is being sold at Incredible Price:R8999
HP Pavilion dv6-3164si
AMD Phenom™ II Quad-Core Processor N950
2.1 GHz, Level 2 cache 2 MB
6 GB DDR3 (1 x 2048 MB + 1 x 4096 MB)
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 Graphics (switchable), up to 3709 MB total graphics memory with 1 GB DDR3 dedicated
640 GB HD

The Asus and HP both reasonable options although I'm a bit off HP and even more so with only a 1 year warranty. ASUS's 2 year warranty is decent but Dells 3 year warranty the best. Dells graphics the weakest of the lot though. HP's 6GB's of ram is sweet as is the 640GB HD of the HP but 500GB @ 7200rpm on the ASUS negates the extra 140GB capacity of the HP. Dell again in last place with 500GB @ 5200rpm. ASUS and Dell 4GB's of ram but Dells rated at 1333MHz vs 1066MHz of HP and ASUS. mmm six of the one and half a dozen of the other. Dell R500 more than the HP and ASUS so the 3 year warranty factored into the price maybe...

ASUS looking the sweetest deal but how are they for build quality and reliability?

If you want to game go with ASUS and depending on how much you want to game you may want to look at something bigger as well.

I would be very concerned about asus support and warranty handling. If it breaks who do you take it to? How long does it take to get fixed? What is the asus support number?

Minimal gaming. Actually my daughter (4) uses it for her interactive web based gaming (Dora, Nickeldeon and the such) and a bit of PvZ's so 15.6" is fine.

It's a standard 2 year collect, repair and return warranty... You reckon ASUS support is kuk?

No idea but check it out before you decide. Nothing worse than rocking up at rectron and waiting 2 months for replacement parts. Rectron shocked me when they sold toshiba.

Not sure who sells asus now, also not sure if you would take it directly to them like other big players or if you go through a middleman. If the support is good then the choice is obvious

I am not worried about the size of the screen, more the grunt of the vga :D but for that type of thing i think even intel hd would work :D.

you take it to Asus direct, in JHB they are at Sandton city, and their support is awesome.
the numer is on the Asus website

You can get better specs with other brands for the same price, but then you only have 1 year warranty, and I've seen quite a few laptops go after 1 year... just after the warranty expired.

The only way that you could've done better would've been when a place like Dion Wired / Incredible Connection had a massive special going in that price range, like the HP DV7 series (now listed as R18k) which went for R9999.

Anyway, from the available stuff I think you made a good choice.
