IBurst Connectivity/Download Speed

Guys,

I have noticed the following, using speedtest.net to test my speed i can actually get the 1mbps speed but whenever i download a file my speed never goes above 130kbps,always averages 120kbps

Am i missing something here? as i was under the impression that one time or another i should be able to get the full speed of my connection.

check again speed test measures at Mbps (mega bits per second) and your download manager measures in KBps (kilo bytes per second), note the capital B and small b - B=bytes , while b=bits, basically rough conversion 1 Mbps = 128 KBps,
in the words of a meme - Your argument is invalid
You are actualy getting full speed - you lucky bugger
 
Rule of thumb, if u have a 1Mb line, divide it by 8 and that's your true download speed... IF you have 100%signal and there is no rain or electrical interference...

I was under the impression that iBurst speed is 1MBps, how did i miss that, so the maximum iBurst speed achievable is 128KBps?

basically all ISP's measure in bps its been like that since i can remember even in the good old days of Dial up, not sure why, im guesing it makes it look more impresive :D

same reason why car manufacturers measure in horse power instead of KW, and those that do convert to KW (that import to SA), measure it at the flywheel and not at the wheels.
 
Those downloading speeds look awesome to me..... for wireless ;)
 
I have notice that my download speed also sucks, i can download at the average of 35kb/s on a file and other days i download at average of 12kb/s. I stay in Pretoria north and even my signal strength jumps up and down, but on weekends i notice that the speeds are great and the signal strength also, then i can play online games with no hassle. Its only in the week i struggle.

I have talked to the support people and looks like they dont know anything. The guy asks for my Iburst serial number on the back of the modem that starts with 00126(UTID) and then he just say i must go on iburst site and do a speed test. lekker ne
 
To explain for those still not getting the bytes vs. bits picture... It has always worked like this in measuring network speeds. 1 byte = 8 bits. this means that 1KB = 8 Kb (1 kilobyte = 8 KiloBits). Note the small difference in KB vs Kb! If you take this and take iBurst, you get this: 1Mbps = 1024Kbps. So, 1024 / 8 = Kilobytes (KBps), which is 128KBps. You will never get more than 130 / 140 KBps on a 1Mbps connection, because theoretically, 128KBps IS 1Mbps.
You will find this everywhere:
56Kbps = roughly 6 - 7 KBps downloads
384Kbps ADSL = roughly 30 - 40 KBps downloads
10Mbps ADSL = roughly 1.3MBps downloads

Even in LAN you get this:
100Mbps lan gives roughly 12MBps transfer speeds and 1Gbps (GigaLAN) will theoretically give no more than 128MBps.

Think that is enough to explain. So my point I'm trying to prove, is that iBurst is just following standards. 1Mbps was never advertised as 1MBps. Understand what you are buying before you buy it.

Its the other why around KBytes (Capital B) Kilobits (Small b) :)
 
Yip, Iburst is 1megabit per seconds service.

8 Bits in a Byte.


Hence 1024 devide by 8 to get "True" speed. = 128KB per second speed throughput. (You should see 80% of that at max, due to it being wireless and Congestion, Weather etc.etc)



You should see 50-80kb per second depending on your signal quality and signal strength. (Move the Router/Modem closer to an open window for better signal)
