I blame steam for this. I took a chance to attempt to go legit and ya. Bit me in the ass.

Bought Homefront. Come home and install, wants to download 5 gig patch. This would be fine if I lived in the USA, but I live in SA where I have a 384kbps line.

Takes a weekend to download.

Bought Shogun 2 : Total War. Same story. Downloads 2 gigs. ..

LUCKILY I use Web Africa. Luckily it didn't rape my cap and downloaded from their servers. But I feel for those who would of been capped out so quickly with these 2 games.

And don't even come with "but ya bru, you can go with uncapped adsl.."

What's the point of buying a game and only getting half a game?

I can haz half mah moniez back?

It does suck yes, it also sucks that Steam games don't download the latest version from the start, rather they download in full and only then do they start updating themselves. It pisses me off immensely waiting a week to dl a 14GB game only to be told, when I click on Play game, that it needs another bloody GB of patches!

Just shows you how monumentally backwards our internet connections are here in SA. Cheap, unlimited, fast DSL or fibre connections are so plentiful in other countries that it's a complete non-issue. That said, this isn't a reason to "support piracy". Publishers do a lot of dick moves that force people into piracy, but I don't think this is one of them. This is just the usual "**** QA, **** beta testing, we 'll do that when the game's already released" - laziness present in the industry these days.

This reminds me of another argument in regards to Steam/Mobile games and piracy.

If you buy a Game via a web shop be it Steam iTunes or GoG, and the game is not Rated by South African Film and Music Board its actually a Criminal matter, example if you try and import the same game in a box Customs can confiscate it, and probably lay a criminal charge esp if you keep on breaking that law. Piracy on the other hand is a civil matter and goes to the civil court, so is it not less of a crime to pirate than to buy something online?

PS: I don't promote piracy its just for the sake of argument, personally I would rather see online markets like iTunes and Android Market be opened for us South Africans so we can legally buy games and other software without breaking Criminal laws and Open Fake US or UK accounts so that we have access to markets.

Oh I bought Homefront on release as well, still haven't seen the game as I am on Cell-C pre paid and 5 gig would be my entire Month's Internet bandwidth. So I have a nice box till I can one day get access to the updates.

This is no reason to support piracy. Steam is amazing wish it had even more games available. To me steam is a great example of the way forward.

The cap problem should make you protest against telkom not steam :/

Then go purchase it at a shop.

You're giving someone with a printer and a dvd burner money, rather than the dedicated team of professionals who spent a lot of time making something that you can enjoy.

I'm 100% against piracy. I know how furious I would be if someone sold my code and I didn't get a cent from it.

Even the shop-bought Homefronts suffer from the same 5gig downloads btw. Store-bought BFBC2 for example requires a 2gig download before you can even play the game, meaning on 3G the download will cost more than the bloody game.

No amount of scaremongering & exagerated losses will make a dent in piracy. Piracy will only subside once the music, games & media industries let go of their outdated pricing structures & sort out their distribution channels. Why aren't a lot of stuff available to us off app stores etc. when we have the money & are willing to buy it legally? Making content easily available at a reasonable price affects buying patterns - I've bought most of my games through Steam specials lately.

So long story short, you support piracy because your hobby is too expensive for you? Get a new hobby, people who pay for it are the reason you even have the privilege of pirating it.

Agreed! I cant get 4mb/s because telkom is useless and my line only supports 384kb/s max 512kb/s
I buy through steam and wait patiently for my game to download, takes a week sometimes but is that the game developer's fault? No its telkom thats useless.
I pay for all that bandwidth and yes its expensive but if you can't afford it why bother with steam, its not like you don't realize you'd have to download the game? Again is that the game developer's fault? Why steal from them then? I would steal from telkom if i could!!!!!!!

I wont buy games with stupid copy protection. Games that require to be connected to the net or want to download updates

Then you'll be stuck playing old games most new games require you to download updates because guess what? They added more awesome stuff for you as a value add after releasing the game.
For example i bought a game and the other day steam downloaded an update with that update came new levels and new playable characters, great i now have more content than i paid for in the beginning, value was added to my game.
There are excuses to pirate like certain protection that limits how many times you can install something you've paid for, screw that. But updates are surely a reason NOT to pirate since they improve your product!

Joke is I buy them, then download the crack. This is the reason I haven't played Hawx 2 yet, cant find a crack for it yet :(

Only games I don't crack is the Steam ones, cause I can play them in off-line mode. I have limited bandwidth and don't feel like paying just to keep developers up to date on how many shots I fired.

My problem is my net connection is too slow and unstable. Uses neotel lite

If you hadn't bought the game you would have had to download the entire thing anyway. Not just 5GB's... Patches fix the bugs of the originally released game, pirate copies do not have this. Multiplayer, pirate copies don't have this.

You just cheap bro.

..

These were bought at the shop. On the box it says " Internet connection required for activation."

Which I thought ok cool, just needs to activate, no probs there.

Then it downloads half the ****ing game..

I don't buy pirate games, that's just retarded. I get from a friend, who has a friend etc.

No. I support piracy because I PAID for half a game. Whereas if I pirate it, at least I don't have to waste my cap on downloading the other half.

idiot pirate. enuf said.

Go troll someone else.

I don't download anything. I get from a friend from a friend from a friend etc. And yes I agree. Cracked copies don't have multiplayer. That's the only reason why I bought Homefront. Fact is I bought 2 games that weren't completed. That's what pissed me off.

You could find someone who has homefront installed and get their steam files, that might have worked.
I was also pretty cheesed about that download, which wasn't even a patch.. And I paid more for homefront than Crysis2 which is a far superior game, least they could have done was thrown in a 2nd disk.

I will still buy games though... I usually buy single player only games for the xbox so I can trade them in and multiplayer games for PC.

YOU SIR ARE AN IDIOT

Of course it's going to take long downloading full games from Steam with a 384kb line. Were you born under a rock? Surely this couldn't have been your first Steam experience.

However, by no means is this a reason to do piracy, how can you even say that?

Your paying R150 roughly for your ADSL 384kb line, for R350 a month (thats R200 more), you can get a 4meg line. Such a fast line along with WebAfrica's un-metered Steam content service, makes Steam so enjoyable. I love it.

Yeah I could have I guess. But then I would had to have waited anyway. Bought the game on launch day. What Btgames could of done was download the missing files and put it on a disc yes. I phoned and asked them to do it, they lol'd at me.

I bought the game from BTgames. I paid for half a game you twat. That's my underlying problem with purchasing games from the shop!

Let me get this straight... You complain about downloading 7gigs without using your BW, when if you were to download the pirated versions, would have used all of your cap...?
