ic, this should be an interesting reply I have been trying to deal with Voda for over a year now re: some kind of VPN solution at a realistic price for the "small" requirement customers. i.e. something that can compete with a analgoue dialup solution currently in place.

@v3g, I know you've previously mentioned that Vodacom does do custom VPNs for customers, how flexible is the system, and is there a web interface customers can use to make changes to their custom VPN?
hmm, didn't know about that ... what are the costs like associated to it?

    Hi,
I am also looking at establishing a connection to s device on a GPRS network, but without luck. I am not so fimiliar with the APN usage, so could soembody please tell me what the difference is between the 'internet" and "internetvpn" APNs?
Has the issue been resolved to get a revese connection up to a device on the GPRs side of the internet?

    Thanks

    Vodacom3G,

Any feedback on that long awaited Hosting APN?

After much thinking and having to balance my budget (lol) I eventually decided to install ADSL to be able to do the hosting thing... but I was informed by Telskom that my exchange has no DSLAM port avaible and they willl get back to me!

I now have basically no options left but the Hosting APN. Any possibility of testing a prelimiary APN?

grubs, I'll do my best to ensure you're the first on the new APN as soon as it is available.

    I'll ask for an update.

    Vodacom3G,
Any news on the hosting APN? What seems to be the greatest challange, does your equipment support this or is it a question of how much to ask for something like it?

Neither , rather standard corporate process. I just got word that all final approvals were received, so now it's up the (normally very quick) engineers to configure it. There's no hardware requirements as such, it's just a different set of config rules that must be provisioned.

anyone got a server on the internet that allows ssh - Could a SSH tunnel from a remote host back to the 3g connected host allow that machine to be reached from the outside world

eg http://hosted.server:12345 goes to 3gHost:80 -- now you surfing?

obviously having a Web host on the internet obviates the need to serve up port 80 but for remote support via msRDP etc, you install openssh and mail your users a shell script that creates the tunnel?

just as I thought that the service from Vodacom is OK, we start to see as soon as it looks to go somewhere, nothing happens.
A lot of people have asked for this service, but it looks like the customer is not the priority here. We all pay for our service, but can't use it as we wish.

Is Vodacom doing us a favour by looking at the hosting APN? It will most definitely not be free and if they decide to make it free, the traffic is going to be higher and that we will pay for.

I am also needing this service asap.( I did not need it initialy)
My original 1gig 24 month contract is looking mighty expensive and feature-"less" than most offerings on the market today.
Vodacom3g - we as well (read: OVER? ) paying customers cetainly deserve this feature ? How are those plans going ? ( nude nudge )

My requests for an update seems to disappear into a black hole. Will chase up again.

It is a niche product with a fraction of a percentage (about 0.01%) of the user base needing it. However, for that fraction, it's a very important service, so I'll keep on pushing the deployment. It's already approved.
