    It gives me 4 options

    -gparted live
    -other modes of gparted live
    -local os in harddrive
    -memory test using memtest86+

I selected gparted live and then it a whole load of white text on black background appears scrolling down the page and then it just gets stuck, the power button can't restart and I have to pull the plug to restart.

The last line says "write protect is off"
That's the right option. Usually it gives you a few options you have to choose using text input, and then it boots into the gparted desktop. Did you ask Google about the error.

And like the dude said do your hdd's show up.

Hi guys ,thanks for all the help.

I End up resolving the issue. It turns out the data cord thingy inside the hp which connects the 4hdd slots wasn't connected fully so that's why it wasn't picking up the hdd.

This thread is too long to read, so, sorry if this has been covered before: What is the difference between KTH-PL313E/4G RAM and KVR1333D3E9S/4G RAM? One is Kingston System Specific Memory for the Microserver, and the other is generic ValueRAM. I can import the one at the same price as the other, if I buy before MyUS sends my parcel, so price isn't an issue, and I don't mind paying the extra R 300 for the error correcting ECC ram over the normal stuff, even though I have no idea what it does. I want to set up a NAS. Thanks.

afaik the server will only use ECC ram. I think I got a 4GB ECC value ram for R350 odd when I got one 2 weeks ago.

    You can use non-ECC RAM. I've got 2 x KVR1333D3N9/4G in a N36L.

In simplistic terms: In the event of a piece of data in memory "corrupting" ECC will detect and correct the error, without it your OS will generally crash. It's only really needed for 24/7 mission critical servers where the likely hood of an event occurring increases the longer a system is running for.

The two types I'm deciding between are both ECC RAM. I just mention that I think the R 300 price difference between 8 Gigs of ECC and 8 Gigs of non-ECC isn't worth arguing over - I'm getting the ECC.

I am also looking to buy another 2. Any suggestions for where?

This is what I found so far:
Server-Warehouse is R1773 at the moment.
Cybernatic is R1599 but they have just removed it from their website, so they might be out of stock.
    BiosOnline is R3835
    HPShop is R1799
    DigitalPlanet is R1799
    Sybaritic is R1880
    GigaBuzz is R1828.48

Cybernatic moves their links around - current search of N40L shows R1699 and in stock - Esquire list theirs at R1708.86 incl.
