Anyone else's SSH logins to their HP Microservers slow?

I was always curious to know as to why my SSH to my HP Microserver took like 10 seconds, where as my office's SSH logins was almost instantaneous. I always thought it was because the CPU wasn't powerful enough for the RSA/DH SSL handshaking.

I now only added the "UseDNS no" line to my /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and restarted the ssh daemon in Ubuntu 11.10 x64, and now my SSH logins are also lightening fast again!

The worst part for me is that it does not make any sense as to why it should be slow, because all my IP addresses have reverse-lookup names on a local DNS server.

No speed issues my side, I'm using FreeNAS. My Raspberry Pi is a helluva lot slower.

Can your HPMS server successfully resolve against that DNS server?

Yes, it can - or at least it does when I run "nslookup <my ip>".

Yeah, it is very odd.
As soon as I enable it again, then it takes a couple of seconds (6 or so) to prompt me for my private key password, after I typed in the root username.
When I disable that DNS thing, then it immediately asks me for my private key password after I said to log in as root!

I now played a bit with my MikroTik's DNS server and that seems to be the issue, because Ubuntu's SSHd queries the hostname without the DNS suffix (even though the /etc/resolv.conf includes the correct suffix), where as Windows' ping command appends the DNS suffix in the query.
So by removing the suffix from the static DNS entry in MikroTik or adding the IP address to the Microserver's /etc/hosts file fix the slow SSH login.

I'm just disabling that "UseDNS" option in SSHd - because then remote logins from other places would be fast too

The GT610 is a re-badged GT520 so should work just fine!

Hey all,

So my laptop finally died, so looking for a low powered 24/7 machine that can do my downloading and other assorted activities.
What I would like it to do is the following:

Media Server (Not player) - Plex is my choice at the moment (http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/)
Backup personal stuff like photos to the raid and dropbox/google drive.
Download NZBs

So was thinking of getting the following:

3x Western Digital Reds, will add 2 more over time as needed. Is it easy to add drives to RAID with out killing the volume? Looking at RAID 5.
1x HP Micro server
1x Raid Controller (any suggestions? I am not familiar with raid controllers. Is this over kill?)

No need for video cards as the server will not be connected to a screen.

With regards to keeping power low, I am going to have all the NZB files downloaded to the OS drive which will not be part of the raid, once completed the files will be moved to the raid. So I am hoping the drives in the raid will power down when not in use and will only spin up when accessed? Not sure if RAID works like this.

I may turn the server into a firewall/cache server later once i am more comfortable with everything, so no need for extra NICs at the moment.

In terms of software any suggestions?
