Just got the 8ta Internet 5 deal to replace our ADSL at home. The problem is we have a wired network at home that connects 3 pc's to the ADSL router. So now I'm looking for a similar 3G router that has at least 3 ethernet ports. Any recommendations? Cheap if possible :P

EDIT: Forgot to mention, we have the Hauwei E173

Had a look at that one since EVERYONE recommends it, but thought it had only wireless. So I did an image search to get a look at the ports at the back and I see it has 4 ethernet ports. And it supports the E173. Seems like a winner. Thanks! Probably should've done a bit more reading before posting, but oh well :P

You can check out TP-Link and their 3G routers as they pretty cheap. I'm using a Netgear MBRN3000 3G router which I'm pretty happy with so far, does the job nicely and seldom get any disconnects, but it is more expensive than the TP-Link one. The Netgear has 4 ethernet ports and Wifi.

You can check the 3G modem compatibility of the Netgear here http://www.netgear.com/3gsupport/mbrn3000/apac/soutafrica.aspx

I have one of these (tp-link) myself. Ask if they still discount it to mybroadband members...

If you're Linux savy and like experimenting, try the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND 4xGbE, 1xWAN, WiFi-n, USB.
Out of the box (using TP-Link Software), the USB can only be used for NAS.
Load OpenWrt - and USB port can then be used to connect most USB "Speed-Sticks".
Otherwise the TP-Link MR3220 or MR3420 may be what you are looking for - 4xEthernet, USB, WiFi n.

ACT Link Cape Town - excellent product

I also got the Netgear MBRN3000 3G, but I cannot get it to detect my Huawei E367. The above URL confirms it is supported through MTN (Unlocked). Surely it should work on 8ta as wel??
Upgraded my firmware as well - MBRN3000-V1.0.0.69_2.0.12WW

You have to set up a profile for 8ta, with number=*99# and correct APN (think it is "internet"). PW/Username blank.

That router should work with the E367.

Did that & then it scans for the modem and finds nothing.

Where did you get the E367, is it local ? A foreign one could be locked.

Does the E367 work in a PC ?

Huawei B970b, not a single problem EVER, best 3G router at 7.2Mbps speed.

Good Luck.

Response I received from Netgear Support:
After reviewing the information you provided, I have a better understanding of your issue and believe I can give you better solution for you.

We support only the product which is given by mtn.co.za(ISP), Sorry to inform you that the product which you are using is not tested with MBRN3000 device and it may not work as the firmware on your product is designed by 8ta(ISP).

Please contact us again if you require further assistance.

Please do visit http://support.netgear.com for any technical queries regarding NETGEAR products.

Must say that I am utterly disappointed in their response & lack of support for the Huawei E367. Before i return the unit, would it be possible to flash it with MTN firmware (http://www.mtn.co.za/Support/DeviceDownloads/Pages/default.aspx) & still use it on 8ta?

So am I correct in understanding that you got the E367 to work on the netgear device after you flashed the MTN firmware?
I have similar issues - with netgear DGN2200M - no USB device connected....

Correct.

Good Luck.

I've got the Huawei B970 and it has two huge problems.

First is that if there is Eskom loadshedding and the power goes *poof*, the router reverts to its default settings = open wireless access with no passcode. Only thing I can do is to unplug it when I leave in the morning.

Second is that you can't go faster than 7.2Mbps (and there's NO way to make it faster!) and 8ta's towers can all do upto 21Mbps.

Much better to get the NetGear.
