    I'm never using it again.
The only way to get the settings is to call them. If you sms "smartdata" to 0841559911, one of the methods to get the settings according to Cell C, you get an error message saying your phone does not support GPRS. This happened with 2 different phones. Meanwhile you pay for the sms

What South Africa needs is a survey that ranks the mobile operators. The UK has the JD Power award for Mobile Operators.

The UK mobile operators make quite an effort to perform well in the survey. We don't have something similar - hence the bad service.

Look for Virgin Mobile end of Q2 this year. Don't expect big price breaks, but maybe some different ways of presenting / packaging cell services.

Value Add services like GPRS are not Cell C's strong point. I don't really know why they bother with them. Other than a kindof "Me too" marketing approach. They are not likely to win any major share of the business market from MTN / Vodacom.

For basic cellular telephony, especially prepaid, they are pretty decent and very competative on price.

I like WireFree's suggestion a lot - perhaps it's something that HelloPeter.com could do with data it already has and a survey that's run regularly...

IMO CellC hasn't figured out how to charge for GPRS yet - subscription charge etc my foot - kicking CellC...

Whilst CellC's pricing for ordinary cellular services might be close to Vodacom & MTN, I believe that CellC is the least competitive of the three - my personal experience with CellC tells me they have no clue about providing decent customer service & support, and their systems suck really badly, but that has been my experience, no doubt others will have been lucky & received decent service from CellC.

Bottom line is that CellC's GPRS needs a pricing overhaul before anyone will seriously consider it...

Agreed. It's like all the others. Basically priced out of the reach of anyone who actually uses the Internet. It's ok for the exec who checks his e-mail and does some light browsing, but for any serious use? Forget it.

Cell C are not here to give good service. They are here to squeeze as much money out of the South african comms market as possible while the f$%Ed up regulatory regime exists. They are owned by a bunch of foreigners. All the money they make is immediatly sent offshore. (It sure as hell isn't plowed back into their services).

Just another part of the government orchastrated rape of South Africa.

Bit harsh dude! Orchastrated implies organised - whereas I reckon it is cluelessness and lack of care. Very much an individual thing - individuals being their worst because they don't know any better
/edit/hopefully Richard Branson will bring good things to the country - across the board. I hope and wish.

The best thing about Virgin coming to SA is the packages (salaries) they offering!!

They're already in SA - started their call-center operation in JHB.
Currently preparing to start taking calls as soon as some details are finalized.

I don't think hellopeter is geared towards that sort of thing. What we need is a proper surveys engine (JD in the UK uses a very complex algorithm in its analytical engine) to do this sort of thing. Perhaps someone with a stats background could get something like this going. I'm sure some forumites (myself included) would assist in the website side of things....

    Default Virgin and CellC

I stand to be corrected on this, but this is how I understand Virgin will work:
    1. They will not be a network operator, but rather a service provider. They will be a CellC preferred service provider.
    2. This means that they will buy airtime from CellC, repackage it, and sell it on to the consumer.
    3. This is the model they follow in most other countries.
    4. Basically, they will work in a similar way to how Cellucity work with Vodacom.

In essence, they will charge the same, but compete on service, OR we can hope that they re-package products to offer either more minutes on a contract, free included SMSs etc.

Yeah , build our hopes up and then offer a MASSIVE 24% price slash.
