Hi Guys,

I am trying to find a decently rugged phone for our factory's foreman. He needs something that can do email etc, preferably has wifi and all the other gadgets, but is mainly dust and drop resistant. I have been looking at the Motorola Defy as an option (it seems perfect, but one problem - as below.)

The only issue with this search is that I need to find a phone that is not hellishly expensive. He just upgraded his at the beginning of the year and our local Vodashop 'gurus' gave him a Nokia x3-02 which has since had to go for repairs 3 times and is now supposedly in for repairs with Nokia themselves as it has had a meltdown of sorts.

Another feature I would greatly appreciate is the ability to connect him to our in-house VOIP system, (TalkSwitch based) which the x3-02 was meant to be capable of (in truth not after much fiddling with custom files and stuff which I never got around to doing).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Moto Defy is the only rugged smartphone I know of.

I don't think you've said what the problem with the Defy (called the MB525 in S.A.) is. For a smartphone, it's cheap (R2800 on prepaid) and if you're looking for a VOIP app, just search the Android Market and you'll find plenty of them.

And while I'm sure it's not indestructible, it's probably about as tough as any other smartphone.

Thanks for the input guys. @drs, I have no problem with the Defy, it was merely the price I was baulking at. Where can I get it for R2800? I have been looking and most places want around R3500-R4000.

I saw it for that price in a Makro advert (admittedly, it was a few weeks ago).

That's not saying much... The samsung galaxy s just needed to be flexed a little too much and the screen shattered.

The defy really is pretty tough, it's so far lasted a drop from a meter + table onto rough concrete (face first), survived the drink, and there's no dust getting in so far. I wouldn't throw it against a wall, or drop it from 3 stories, but it'll do just fine in reasonable conditions...

Otherwise, you could use bubble wrap?
