(Slightly OT, deal with it)

This facility has supposedly been available to MTN subscribers since 1 July last year - has anybody successfully made a change?

I am with Autopage and am out of contract in less than a month, and I want to change to MTN SP on a point of principle, because I don't consider Autopage to be worthy of my business any more.

To my knowledge most sp's are still working on the MNP olicies so i dunno if any of them (barring the net sps) are actually porting clients as yet........use it dnt use it

I have tried to go from mtn sp to italk and from what I could gather, no one seems to know anything about this. They all say it will happen sometime this year, once I explain the concept to them ... they probably thinking of number portability... anyways ... they don't seem to really offer this service, despite their claims. If I am wrong, then please can someone tell me who to speak to at mtn to switch service providers.

As far as I know one can only port to MTNSP and keep your number but you cannot port away from any of the other SP's without losing your number yet.
So if you with Autopage then you will loose your number ,best bet is hang on till later then move, once all the documentation and regulations has gone through...

Thanks for the comments folks!

I remembered talking to someone at MTN SP last year, so I dropped him a line and here is his response:

To answer your Q - the number portability process
is in place within the MTN umbrella but at this point in time it is
dependant on the current service provider to grant the number.

What I mean is that your current service provider must (in writing)
approve that they are willing to give away the specific cell number to
another service provider. If you can obtain this then we would able to
move the number on top our base and activate as one of our clients.

However if the other SP refuses then until July (when this becomes
mandatory) we don't have a leg to stand on. The best we could do is take
out a contract with us and then I try and find you a number close to
that of yours currently.

So I must write to my service provider and ask them to release the number...we'll see what happens.
