Thread: List of congested exchanges?

The exchange in nearest to Edgemead, Cape Town has recently gone to sh**. In this past week my pings have shot up from 10-30 all the way to 300+ (Peaks at around 600 sometimes).

My line speed is also diminished, but that could just be me being throttled. I'm more worried about ping anyways.

I work in Bellville South. For the past week the speeds have been terrible, could this be a congested exchange or is it just IS that is causing problems?

I have logged several calls with Telkom and currently have one open (17ATK270811) and povided them with the speedtest results from various days and times. Sadly they are not doing anything to resolve the problem.

I guess the only thing is to get enough of us to make our results public and then if we're lucky we might get them to do something. My modem sync speed and quality is excellent. Latency is good and I have no line errors or packet loss, but download throughput is shocking most of the time (below 300kps). Upload speed is not a problem and test at 0.4Mbps most of the time
Sounds exactly like my ADSL. Vierlanden, Durbanville. Currently getting 7KB/s...on a 4Mb line. Uploads at full speed. Couple of calls to Telkom, 4 times to the shop, 3 escalations (first two very friendly, 3rd one full of **** **** **** ****s), stopped a techie on the road. End result? NO RESPONSE.

Currently fantasizing about C4 and the exchange...

Currently considering this approach as well, as this seems to be the only solution to the problem really...

Getting 1000ms on average after hours and it starts claming down to about 500ms later at night and only returns to normal at about 11:30 - 12:00pm. I'm sick of this ****. Thinking about cancelling my ADSL, but only after giving them a little bit of uphill.

Easy. They on the same BRAS as you, but on a different DSLAM. Each DSLAM has it's own uplink to the BRAS. A single DSLAM can only take between 100-1000 ports. If its a dslam on the street then its gonna be closer to 50-100 ports.

wtf are you talking about. I'm on mweb 4mb uncapped, and live near beaumont primary

    international ping - hetzner.de = 179ms
    local pings - 196.25.1.1 = 11ms
    google.co.za = 11ms

maybe its your ISP rather than your DSLAM

Zappers/Vindicator do you have calls open with Telkom? I want escalate this, maybe if we escalate multiple calls for multiple parties we have a better result... this is interfering with my game time!

I just purchased a WebAfrica Pro account (I always use Afrihost) just to eliminate the possibility of my slow speeds being ISP related. It isn't (btw... getting better pings on Afrihost).

I assume then that my exchange is also congested. The slow speeds only started this month.

Anyone else on 012991xxxx? Think its called the Faerie Glen exchange.

Is a "congested exchange" something Telkom would fix?
