Does anyone have any idea when we will get the frimware update on the Nokia N9 in South Africa ?
I know it's available in other countries (since sometime in November already), but it seems not here yet (phone keeps saying it's up to date).

My wife's phone has the bug whereby you cannot create or log into a nokia account. The only way to fix this is via a hard reset (and you cannot restore your backup) or a firmware update. Without this account, you cannot use nokia maps etc.

The phone is on Vodacom, so I guess they're taking their time to add their crap into the software. I don't really want to use navifirm, because I'm afraid of bricking a brand new phone.

Flash it. I did it, took 5 minutes (excluding the download), quickest flash ever. Just download the NDT 16GB BLACK (059J1Z5) and follow instructions. Also, add a "-R" to the firmware flasher's command line call to make the phone reboot automatically upon completion. Chance of you screwing it up is almost 0, and even then you can force a reflash of a bricked phone.

AFAIK there's only 16 GB black N9's in SA. Of course, to OP, if you imported it yourself or something, get the corresponding size and colour, very important.

Sorry, didn't know that. I was fortunate to get mine through a competition. It's a 64gb black version.

I'll double check the variant as per link. Thanks, will probably go ahead and flash it. As per the changelogs, it appears to be a worthwhile update.

I assume I'll void the warranty ?
Will this also remove all the embedded vodacom crap ?

You'll void the warranty, downflashing is not possible either, so if something breaks, you'll go in with nokia default firmware which they might have a piss-up about. Keep that in mind.

It will remove all operator branding. If you don't want to flash, I can show you how to remove it as well without any flashing.

For all of you waiting for the official update: I had my N9 updated today by Nokia Care in Cape Town. Lost all previous entries but luckily I made a back up using PC Suite before. Only items permanently missing are the favorites in Nokia maps.

Thanks for the heads up. I never did flash it. Hopefully the OTA will come soon.

According to the Nokia chap in Cape Town we will not get the OTA update. As you are in Pretoria it could be that the Nokia Care centre in Jo'burg can do the update for you. It tokk the guys here over 4 hours to download the complete PR 1.1 update but it was worth the wait!! Good luck...

I like a good camera phone. I recently bought a Nokia N9 and it takes good pictures, but the touch screen is not so responsive and malfunctions twice within six weeks after I bought a new N9. Both instances the screen freezes. I took it to Nokia to repair and the technician advised that he will upgrade the software. The second instance I requested that Nokia replaced the phone, but they declined. Still the problem persists. The N9 is a problem phone. I will never buy a Nokia again.

I think you might have a hardware fault. Never had the symptoms with mine that you have.

Downloaded PR 1.2 yesterday OTA. Took altogether a couple of hours( 284 MB),including the installation. Looks like Nokia Cape Town unbranded my Vodacom crap and only a couple of wallpapers are left. Nice update especially the folder option in the the app. page.;)

Thanks for the update. My wife's phone still shows 'device is up to date', but her phone does also suffer from the bug that stops her from using a nokia account, so I suspect it's also preventing the OTA update. I'll do hard reset tonight and try again. Sounds like a worthwhile update.

Silly check but make sure you're refreshing the screen with the icon at the top right of the screen when checking for updates. I've updated to PR1.2 and I almost want to go back. The new features are nice but alot of the transitions/ animations aren't as smooth as it was on PR1.1

Also noticed quite a few changes in the "drive" section of OVI maps. Speed warnings, "home" setting in favourites, etc, etc. Haven't noticed any change in battery performance. 2 Days with moderate use. Quite happy with that.

Howdi folks

Sorry to revive old things but my OTA update worked when i got my phone last week... So i'm on PR 1.2.
And I also had an issues with my nokia account and google and didnt know why! Until I realised i had 2011 not 2012 :)

But my main question is this: To all N9 owners: Where can i find a Matte finish Screen Protector? I'm from Cape Town :) I want it for the anti smudge!
