Problems connecting Samsung Galaxy Tab to home Wi-Fi Router

I received my FNB-promo Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 last week - no complaints on turnabout time.

I have a 2gig 3g card with MTN and inserted SIM and got connected no problems.

But when I tried to connect to the Wi-Fi router (3g, also MTN), even when prompted for password (and correctly entered), it would not connect.

It shows available Wi-Fi connections, mine has a little lock on it.

We connect to the Wi-Fi router with two laptops, I believe 5 connections are possible.

Any suggestions?

And thanks in advance
Michael

It's locked because you have to enter the wifi password/key (example x1x2x3x4x5/1234567890/abcdefghij) once you have entered the wifi key then you should in theory have access to your router...

Thanks O Grand Master.
Unfortunately I tried that but the device remains locked. So the Tab can see that there is a Wi-Fi router and identifies it, but when prompted for the password and I enter it, it remains locked and I have no signal to connect to the net, etc.

Wait, are you saying not password but Wi-fi key (ie a different number?)? I'll have to try when I'm at home later, but please confirm.

Many thanks!

Welcome to the forum Michael,

What encryption are you using on your wifi. I use WPA/WPA2 PSK and I gave mine a fixed IP address on my network.

Thanks for the welcome!
I did not do anything special when I set up the wifi, no encryption but access is password protected. I am at work now so hard to check with the router what settings are preventing access.
Would it be possible for you to give me some pointers, I can check and then get back to you on this?
Sorry for any hassle!

If it is a straightforward WPA, the password can just be entered. If it is a rotating password with a master key, you need to look on the router for a wireless connect button (it is usualkly quite obvious and always on the front next to the lights for WLAN). That will open the router to a new connection, and your tab should connect instantly. Also, make sure that the DHCP is enabled on the router, since if no IP is assigned to the tab, the tab will think that you entered the wrong password when you didn't.

Okay then, then you probably on WPA/WPA2 PSK as well. For the laptops, did you give them a fixed IP address or does the router give them the IP.

If it is fixed you will have to manually enter the IP address in the Tab.

Don't really know what else could go wrong.

Just try one thing before you do anything else:

Turn the router off and back on,then switch wifi off and on on the tab

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. When I set it up, I did not do any IP assigning. All I did was connect via password and bob's your uncle (and been taking advantage of the uncapped until it becomes uncapped lite - if ever there was an oxymoron. They might as well call it almost perfect!).

I will try the switch off switch on suggestion and see if that works.

As an aside, I have a SIM inserted in the machine, does anyone know how I can manually switch between Sim and Wi-Fi at home where both are available so I don't have to remove the SIM each time I want to connect via WiFi.

I must say, this is a really great forum, you guys really are helpful. Much appreciated!

Android devices like the tab prioritize Wifi over 3g by default ( the exception is when it goes into standby it switches Wifi off by default, this can be changed though )

It will automatically work over wifi if it is connected even if your sim is in. Wifi gets preference.

Hope you come get it all sorted out.

Thanks very much guys, most helpful (and hopefully most useful!)

Will report back once I've tried the suggestions.

You might also want to double-check your password by enabling "show password" when typing it in. I found with my tablet (also a Galaxy Tab 10.1) that the auto-complete feature was messing up my password.

OK, some feedback:
Tried removing SIM and switched off router and on again. Also Wifi on Tablet off and on. Still no Wi-Fi.
On Wifi settings, the network shows my router with a little lock. The Wi-Fi alternates between scanning, when it does, it shows my network as "Disabled, secured with WPA/WPA 2 PSK" for about 5 seconds, then just shows router ID.

The bars on bottom right to show network signal are empty.
I also tried to reset the modem (the button below the on off button).

Help!

OK, sincerest apologies for wasting everyone's time.

Password was case sensitive!!!!

Now I hope you guys learned something here today!!

(I'll take myself behind a big bush and thrash myself with a wet sponge!)

/facepalm

Since you said "correctly entered" in the first post nobody bothered calling your bluff :P
