ADSL Line fubar

Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone here can help me or maybe point me in the right direction.

My adsl at home is currently quite broken, and after fighting with telkom for a couple months I finally got a guy to come on site and have a look at the issue.

Now apparently the physical line in my house/complex is damaged and needs to be replaced. Telkom says they dont fix that, and my body corporate says they dont fix that either. Does anybody know of anyone I can contact to come out and replace the telephone cable so I can get my adsl working again?

I'd really appreciate any help.
 
Its common property so it is actually up to the body corporate to repair.

Is it a underground cable or suspended?

If its underground just ask the body corporate if they mind you bringing in a TLB so you can locate the cable fault.

If its suspended just follow it from your place to the pole, and see if you can see anything wrong, maybe a tree or branch thats fallen on it.

Its underground as far as I know. And the lady from the body corporate was quite adamant that it isnt their problem tbh, but that might just be normal body corporate antics to try not pay for something again.

What is a TLB however?

I live in the weltevreden park area.
 
TLB = mechanical digger
give demographics of the complex may be you just need to pull a new piece of cable in
may be it is just a small piece of cable
if it is short and it is piped you can can make a plan
normally in a complex there is a central point where the underground cable from Telkom terminates
from there it is fed to each cluster and each cluster has a box where it terminates
from there it is fed to the individual units
Give fault symptoms ..line dead or crackles ??

I dont think the body corporate will be very happy with me if I bring in a machine to dig up the pavement :D

Are there any other possible solutions? When the telkom guy did his checking he basically showed me that there is a junction type box in the complex. From there you get almost no signal from my house (which is about 50-60m away of the box). But from the box to the local exchange its fine. Thats basically the piece of cable I need to replace.
 
Is it just you in the complex that has no line, i moved into a flat a while back and it had been refurbished and all line and points taken out of the flat, the owner of the flat got a plumber to come in and he got white plumbing piping and neatly on the exterior of the building along with outher pipes, installed it to the box in the flat where all the lines come into, i then phoned telkom, i let them know what had been prepared and measured the distance to the flats box, so they knew to bring enough cabling etc, they pushed it through the piping, put a point inside and i was connected.
 
Sadly for your chair lady the common cables like telephone cables and even TV cables should they have a central arial are the responsibility of the complex. They have to have it sorted or you could go nasty.

You could contact the menagement agents if they are an independnt company & find out where/what....
 
Honestly, I just want the thing fixed, even if I have to pay for it myself. It really isnt worth fighting with people about, and the body corporate would most likely take months to do their part even if I did start to fight with them.
 
i think what i did would work well in this situation, just find out where the blocks box is and map a route back to your flat, phone a plumber, when telkom come they can disconnect the faulty internal line and send the new line down the ...neat - (moaning body corporates worried about the aesthetics of the outside of the block) piping and wolah youre good to go.

plumber may cost a fair bit though maybe 500 - 750 depending how far away you are from the box
 
I don't think its an option for me though unfortunately :(

The box is on the side of the parking area, and laying piping would mean it would have to go over 3 other units to get to mine, that's a ton of piping. There has to be a way to use the current infrastructure to thread through a new cable.
 
darn, mine went down two floors and past 3 flats it was about 50 m
 
Do you know for sure that you are the only person that has a line fault?

The line is common property whether your dense body corporate know it or not. Before you do anything, permission in writing from them that you may attempt to repair the line.

Then make sure that one of your neighbours has not inadvertently cut/damaged your line. Check for digging that took place around the time of the fault and if the cable runs exposed before it enters the ground then check that too, it just takes a slip of the spade to damage a wire. Then check the manhole on the other side and make sure that there is no damage there.

Worst case is that you will have to locate your line on the other end, splice a new cable onto the end and pull it back through the trunking to your unit.


Get written permission. If the fault is bigger than you anticipate and you inadvertently damage more than you fix in the process you must make sure that your ass is covered.
