Hi all

As you might know I am in the process of building my new rig and I wanted to know if its worth it to get an SSD? What are the differences between it and a HDD besides the fact that it doesn't "Spin" and does it slow down after time?

A TRIM enabled ssd is a very nice thing to have if your budget can afford it. There is quite a performance boost from hdd to ssd (just did the move myself), but only get that after you've made sure you have everything else you want. Although ssd's are awesome, it's not the most important thing in a pc to have

SSD is one of the biggest upgrades you can make to your PC. Once you go SSD you won't want to go back!

Do it!

As dual said, its one of those upgrades that you think "Why the hell didn't I do this sooner?!"

Next to a 2 generations upgrade of graphics cards its the best best upgrade you will ever see :-)

SSDs are DEFINITELY worth it. You'll need a HDD to store all your movies and **** on as well though.

I concur!
I added a SSD to my laptop and WOW do eclipse and visual studio fly!
It wont make any difference in game frame rates though, only loading times

Definately worth it and not as expensive as it used to be- 120gb agility 3 now less than R1600

WTF? is it worth it? It's a billion gajillion kapillion times faster than any spinnable hard drive can get. In fact, your motherboard is more likely to be the new bottleneck if you're not careful.

What do you guys think of getting a Hybird drive?...for those on a budget but would like a taste of a what an SSD has to offer.
Any of you tried one?

Haven't tried a hybrid, but you may also want to research this: http://www.ocztechnology.com/ocz-synapse-cache-sata-iii-2-5-ssd.html

My understanding is that is basically turns your existing HDD into a 'hybrid' without having to re-install.

Prices don't seem that bad for a SSD...will need to do some more research in to the advantages/disadvantages of Hybrid drives.

I c Gizmodo ran a review of a Seagate Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drive Lightning Review: A Taste of SSD, for Cheap

Not 1 negative response about SSD's, will definetely add one to my new rig list, most likely I'll get a 64GB one.

I think a 120GB should be what you are aiming at. 60GB could be a bit right.

I have a Vertex 3 120GB SSD as my primary drive, and a Momentus 500GB Hybrid as my secondary. Makes a massive difference!

I had the Vertex 2 since Feb last year. About a month back it died. I sent it in a temporarily put my original HDD back in so I could keep using my notebook while I waited for the replacement (warranty). My machine felt like an old donkey. Sooooo slow with an HDD :)
