Windows 8 Consumer Preview Will Be Available For Download On 29th February

I am looking forward to this release... maybe some more polish to the Developer Preview.

I have found the Win8 Developer Preview to be very resource friendly and quite stable... the only thing that wobbled it for me was messing with network setting and bridging adapters... got to see the new BSOD a few times.

If previous experience counts for anything... Vista betas and pre-releases (even RC) were unstable and resource devourers... and thus we had the pffffft called Vista. Windows 7 betas were rock solid and played nicely with resources... and we have the yumm of Windows 7 as we know it.
Windows 8 so far is proving to be more like 7 than Vista. I think it may be surprisingly usable. Perhaps it is the shock of the Metro thing ?

I am looking forward to the Public Preview.
 
As tempting as it is... I think I'll wait for SP1? Maybe. If the price is right.

My XP SP3 (SP2) still running just fiiiiiine and dandy for me. :D
 
So if we go by Microsoft's standard quality cycle, this OS will be a flop. Remember folks, it's 1 good then 1 bad.. :|

Very true! They've taken a ballsy move with the design change as well. Office 2007 anyone?

They have been all good, except for Vista.... even ME (Ms' ginger child) is more loved than Vista. :p

98 (not 98SE), ME, Vista, 8.................

already these reports that it's "resource hungry" are worrying - that's exactly how it started with Vista.
 
I'm running the DP on my little 3 year old laptop with 2.2Ghz Core2 Duo and 4GB of RAM... it boots faster than Win 7 and is responsive. Perhaps its weakness is its resemblance to 7... remove the Metro and charm bar and it functions like 7 does. Not a very compelling argument for upgrading.

I fiddled with it on an HP tablet and suddenly Metro made sense. Stylus input begins to work intuitively. The clunky mouse click, Metro scroll startmenu keyboard groan evaporated.

But I have grown accustomed to the new interface. I work with it now.

I do not like the status panel move to the right in explorer, but maybe this will change.

I am eager to see how the Consumer Preview differs from the DP... I hope that it has more 8 eliments in it that distinguish it from 7.

I have not found it resource hungry at all... the same laptop with Vista on... hooooooooooooooo boy, do not get me started!
 
I dunno why vista gets a bad rep. I loved vista, it was far better than xp. Windows 7 though is just off the chart amazing.

I hope it's like the early windows 7 releases. Then again vista drivers worked on windows 7 which helps where as xp driver never worked on vista obviously.

I also never had an issue with windows vista(mainly due to a massive pc upgrade and then windows vista immediately) so it kicked my xp pc's ass badly...

...but then came windows 7 and it was the equivalent to an hardware upgrade in terms of performance. Will have to see what it's like, don't really see the point as I boot xp for gaming regardless. I think it will be a waste for all windows users with apple/android tablets as I'm not dumping my iPad just so windows can be in its element, and if it looks and feels like 7 there is just about no reason to upgrade.
 
Yea i also had a power pc for vista with an ssd so maybe that is why i never noticed what others did.

Windows 8 will be my main OS for sure. If it can play games and run my apps then i will use it. I Cannot wait for the preview, now i must perhaps go buy a 64 gb ssd for testing purposes.

Well that only allow you to get the Developer Preview before the others. Consumer beta will probably be open to everyone?

If not, /me flashes Companies "Gold Certified" Partner card :)
