R260 computer - register for a Raspberry Pi from South Africa

Mine arrived 08:30 yesterday, which meant I had to spend a lot of time playing :)

I had a bunch of problems which all boiled down to an inadequate power supply, which, once remedied got rid of them. I'm now running a headless install using Putty & Xming, so PI has only a power connector, USB from PC) and a network connector.

I found that the SD I ordered needed updating, both bios & apps.

I just used a spare SD card I had. It works quite well. Haven't connected it to the internet yet, will do so once I get a connector for my Pi for my LCD screen.

R435 for the PI, but they now posting so had to collected from Post office, had to pay another R 191 in duties.

This for a Type B with case.

What a rip - I got my 3 pi's and only had to pay in about R150

I receive mine yesterday.. loaded up Raspbmc, but for the life of me cant get Openelec working..

yes because it is a piece of junk...

No it's not. It's a brilliant little computer and just because you lack the knowledge to get it working does not mean it is junk.

I have both the 256MB and 512MB Model Bs.

So the Model B came out in both memory versions? I'm sure mine was the prior and I don't have it with me (Invoice doesn't give RAM details) I just found mine struggled with anything that used even the smallest amount of GPU power.

The onboard GPU can actually play Quake 3 and HD video, but you won't be able to play any modern games on it. The second revision of the Model B (the newer version) has 512MB RAM installed.

You have to see the Pi for what it is. The Pi foundation (or whatever they call themselves) made it very clear that it's an affordable computer for educational purposes to teach kids about programming and electronics. It excels in its purpose.

The fact that it can also be used as a media center, web server, minecraft server, or torrent box is simply further testament to its excellence.
