Default The Female Vocalist Music Thread

    Hey all

I've started this thread to share and discuss Female Vocalists (and the accompanying music). I hope there are plenty of you out there who find a particularly beauty in some females vocalists' voices!

I'll start with an unusual case of an artist I found while listening to a Flying Lotus BBC One mix, who recorded an album in 1970 which fell on deaf ears, only to be rediscovered and re-released recently.

    Linda Perhacs

Obscure psychedelic folk singer Linda Perhacs released her only album, “Parallelograms,” in 1970 to scant notice or sales.

It was rediscovered with new weird america and the revival of psych folk. Consequently, it was expanded and re-released in 2005.

After 25 years away from the music industry (many spent as dental technician), Perhacs is currently working on her second album. New Weird America songwriter Devendra Banhart collaborated with her in the creation of his song Freely. He is reportedly working with her on her new album.

Next up is Bjork, who probably needs no introduction. Her album Vespertine, produced with electonic musician Matmos, was never commercially popular, probably due to its ambient eclecticism.

    Björk

    Vespertine

Vespertine, released in August 2001, is an album by the Icelandic singer/songwriter/musician Björk. It sees Björk creating an introverted, quiet world of swirling microbeats and personal lyrics. On the cover she can be seen wearing the swan dress (designed by Marjan Pejoski) that caused a stir at the 2001 Academy Awards.

My Brightest Diamond, possibly my all time favourite. Powerful, dynamic voice that reaches deep. Glorious music, as well.

That chick from Lacuna Coil has a pretty awesome voice.

And I can't believe I'm saying this, but my gf dragged me to Celine Dion when she was in SA, she really has an amazing voice, to do the stuff she does live is pretty talented.

Karin Elisabeth Dreijer–Andersson (born 7 April 1975 in Nacka, Sweden),[1] also known by her stage name Fever Ray, is the lead vocalist of the electronic duo The Knife, formed with her brother Olof Dreijer. Andersson was previously the vocalist and guitarist of the alternative rock band Honey Is Cool. Andersson released her debut solo album under the name Fever Ray in 2009. Her vocal style is notable for both shrill and deep tones, and also the use of multitracked vocals, with different uses of pitch-shifting technology on each track, creating an intricate, mysterious effect. Many listeners mistake the deep vocals on songs by The Knife for those of her brother. Visually, Dreijer Andersson employs the use of masks, face and body paint, intricate costumes, and other theatrical elements in photo shoots, videos and live performances, during which she often performs behind a gauze screen that partially obscures her from view.[2]

    Lou Rhodes

Lou Rhodes is an English singer and songwriter from Manchester, now living in Wiltshire. In addition to providing vocals and lyrics for the band Lamb, Rhodes has released three solo albums: Beloved One, Bloom and One Good Thing. Rhodes has collaborated with 808 State, A Guy Called Gerald, Funkstörung, Pale 3, Sugizo, Plump DJs, Sheila Chandra, Eliza Carthy, Art of Noise, and The Cinematic Orchestra on Ma Fleur and the soundtrack to Les Ailes Pourpres.

    Musical style

Although Lamb are famous for blending trip hop with jazz and elements of drum and bass, Rhodes's solo work is more organic and rooted in folk music. Rhodes expressed a doubt that she will ever return to electronica.[3] She combines finely tuned acoustic guitars—the essence of almost every arrangement—with violin, double bass, and rich percussion. Lyrically, her songs can be described as extremely romantic, soulful and very personal,[4] this is how Rhodes explains the last album's lyrics:[5]“ Sometimes I think, "My God, I keep writing all these love songs," and I really struggle with that. I think I'm a bit of an emotional junkie, you know? It seems to be what consumes me. The heart never ceases to provide me with subject matter. I don't know why that is. Someone asked me the other day, "Are you in love with being in love?" And I couldn't really answer that question.

Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie" Casady

CocoRosie is a musical group formed in 2003 by sisters Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie" Casady. The sisters were born and raised in the United States, but formed the band in Paris after meeting for the first time in years. Their music has been called "freak folk",[2] and incorporates elements of pop, blues, opera, electronica, and hip hop.

CocoRosie began as a duo, with Sierra singing, playing the guitar, piano and harp, and Bianca singing and manipulating various children's toys, electronic and percussion instruments, as well as other exotic noisemakers. They subsequently added various backing musicians, usually a bassist, keyboardist, and beatboxer. They have been a very active touring group, playing across Europe, the United States, and elsewhere. They have released four full-length albums: La maison de mon rêve (2004), Noah's Ark (2005), The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (2007), and Grey Oceans (2010).
