Thread: 2Mb Modem Vs 1Mb Gaming Latency

Default 2Mb Modem Vs 1Mb Gaming Latency

    Hi there

I have been using iBurst for about 5 years now and I have always had decent latency within WoW (EU) CSS (Local) average about 200-330ms for wow and 40-60ms for CSS.

The last few months I have been using the new 2MB modem and it has been very frustrating. My 1Mb modem works like a charm especially for css 40-60ms no problem. I plug my 2Mb modem in and that goes to 90-100ms latency 100% signal. I test download speeds and no problem

Download Speed: 1449 kbps (181.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 391 kbps (48.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
    Latency: 155 ms

Thats the mybroadband speedtest with my 2Mb modem. I deem those speeds good for local and I shouldn't have any issues the latency is what concerns me. But no matter what I do my latency for local games CSS BF3 etc are horrible and I end up plugging in my 1Mb modem to play.

Looking at my 2Mb modem I have the latest firmware sent to me by iBurst the following info is from the routers webpage

    Link Information

    Aligned BSCC 19
    Link Status Connected (1)
    Link Speed 0 / 0 kbps
    Frame Error 0.00 %
    Signal Strength 100 %

    Software Version C104C0C9
    Software Build Date 2011.05.24
    Hardware Build Date 2001.10.04

Is there any way to assist me with the problem? also is it just me that is getting better latency from my 1Mb modem?

To me it feels as if I have downgraded my latency for faster download speeds and being a gamer thats just a rubbish trade-off.

    Regards

Don’t worry man you are not alone, luckily I still have both modems so i can still use my 1mbps modem for online games but my 2mbps modem is not so fast as yours, in fact my 1mbps modem is faster but yes latency is to high on the 2mbps modem.

They don't tell you this when you buy the modem off course...

That's why my BF3 pings are so bad these days

The same here I have to plug in my 1mbps modem (latency = 90ms) to play bf3 the 2mbps modem (latency = 200ms) and that is not fast enough to play bf3 online.

    Interesting...

I am willing to be a test subject for any tests iBurst wants to do to help improve this. I don't mind if I have to move house....but please....just want to be able to game without using another modem

My silver surfer gets better latencies than my old black knight.

I've added similar findings on the Official SilverSurfer thread.

While my download speeds are running epically well for what has been advertised as 2MB connection speeds, I can unfortunately not say the same about my latencies.

The biggest disgrace being that MWEB and SGS game servers outperform those of iGame on their own network

If I could add some healthy guess (conjecture) work here, I would imagine that the two "welded together" modems have problems syncing between each other internally which would add some latency client side.

My orange modem outperformed the new modem by an average of 80ms tested over 50 pings to numerous sites when I tested a while back.

What we need to prove this would be a traceroute to the game server from the same machine, comparing both modems...
    Perhaps some netstat work too...?

I sold my orange modem just a couple of days ago, and I'm regretting it already.

    Anyways...good luck.
