Article: Austrian company makes R1.2 billion from SA e-Tolling

haha, that's about all they are gonna make. Cos the tolling system is gonna fail, and they will be out of pocket for the rest.
You shoulda done your homework first about doing business in Africa. :p

This is completely disgusting. There is no reason at all for revenues from fines or tolls to be leaving the country.

Whoever was responsible for awarding this contract should be hanged for treason after being made to repay ALL the kickbacks they OBVIOUSLY received for doing this.

Do we have laws against treason in South Africa? I really do think we need a zero tolerance and we need to be extremely harsh on people who put their own greed before the well being of the nation.

The article isn't very clear, is that R1.2b the total amount for the fines or a percentage? Perhaps the current traffic/parking fine system was sold as a service?

The only road in Cape Town that is being tolled to my knowledge is Chappies. And then of course Hugenoot Tunnel...but that has always been a toll road.

Both of those have alternative pothole-free routes which are still well maintained.

Just out of interest...Cape Town being under DA controll and the WC also being DA run...do they have control over tolls being put into place or is that SANRAL (which I would say is ANC run)?

SANRAL are under national government so the DA doesn't have much of a say. They did threaten legal action when SANRAL tried to bully through with their tolling plans in the WC, and thus far those plans have been shelved due to the mess in GP. It is better to have support of the provincial government in which you operate.
