Hey guys

I have a query for you gaming okes...

14 year old friend of the family is an avid gamer... plays MW COD2 / 3... his mum gave him an HP probook 4515s for Xmas 2010, he really needed a gaming PC, but beggars cannot be choosers.

It has been OK with his MW games but now he is trying to play Battlefield 3 on it... and it is struggggggggggggling. Jerky graphics, stuttering sound etc.

I am clueless with gaming specs... and have suggested he sells his laptop for whatever he can get for it and get a PC for Battlefield 3.

Now... what would be the required specs for this ? i3 / i5 / Graphics card etc... all on tight budget.

All input greatly appreciated and welcome.... and if anyone has any magic tricks to get it playable on the Probook, please share !!!

/shrieks and yells of frustration

You are going to have to be more specific. How much can he flog the laptop for and how much extra cash does he have at his disposal?

Just downscale the resolution and detail settings.

Otherwise you'll need a minimum of an desktop i3 + HD6850 if you want to play at 1920x1080.

bf3 wants a quad core or i3/i5 and hd 6850 or gtx 560 etc for 1920x1080

or on really budget get amd APU(A8 3850) with hd 6670, pc can be built for 3.5k without a drive and screen

I dunno hey... I will talk with him tomorrow... he is bringing the laptop round to see if I can sprinkle pixie dust on it to make it work. I have tried to break the news to him gently that it is not going to work, but he lives in hope.

The laptop I assume is in good condition, will see tomorrow... but at the best, I assume he can expect around R2000 - R2500 (I live in hope). I was thinking that around R8000 for a Battlefield friendly system ? i3 and such... with probably a 550 ti card and no-frills mobo ???

Perhaps he should try and swap the laptop for components ??

I dunno... hence here I throw myself at the feets of the gurus... :)

I have suggested he downscale everything... he says that everything is set to low and it is on it lowest res... but the sound sputters/stutters and the graphics freezes, sticks, jerks etc. Completely unplayable.

The Probook is an AMD Turion x2 Ultra @ 2.4GHZ with dedicated 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330... I doubt that anything well help it in BF3.

This sounds promising !

That CPU might be up for the task, but the GPU is way below the minimum requirements!

If he doesn't have a screen yet, then a desktop PC would most likely cost more, because he'll need a screen and Windows 7 x64 Home Basic license for the desktop PC.
Most of the laptops, under R8k has resolutions of 1366x768, which sux.

Your friend would most likely be better off with a console - like Xbox 360 / PS3.

Otherwise he should look at 2nd-hand stuff.

I suggested a console, but the parents refuse outright... a pc can be used for school work they say... ... while a console is just for gaming. LOL.

His dad has a copy of Win7 64 pro... he was sold it with his Macbook Pro by the Apple genius... never used it, no bootcamp, so that is sorted.

I have some reservations about 2nd hand, but maybe it is something to look at.

The poor oke sounds desperate ! Shame.

Alternatively he should just stop playing new games, until he earns a good enough salary to buy a decent PC.

I kept on playing CS1.6 during my university days, simply because I didn't have money to upgrade my AMD 2600+ with GF2GTS to anything better than that. Now I have a pretty sweet gaming rig that I bought myself :)

Hehehehe... you are harsh Pada... the dude is 14... and not even in varsity yet !

CPU : AMD FX-6100 @R1700
Motherboard : @R557
GPU : MSI GTX 560Ti@R2418
HDD : Seagate Barracuda 1TB @R660
Power Supply : Corsair CX600 @R910
RAM : Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (x2) DDR3-1333 @R120 each
Case : Cooler Master Elite 310 @R310
Optical Drive : Asus DVD-RW 24X @R150

Total = R5945

There's my quote, would be able to run BF3 at 1920x1080 and will be good for quite a few games to come.

*Take note that I've put a cheaper motherboard that won't support SLI in the future.

Duff-Man,
For BF3 you can do away with a much cheaper setup.
AMD FX-4100 @ ~R1300
Motherboard @ ~R600
GPU: MSI AMD HD6850 OC ~ R1600 / Gigabyte HD7770 OC @ R1600
PSU: Corsair CX430 @ ~R450
RAM: 2x 2GB DDR3 1333MHz @ ~R250
DVD-Drive @ ~ R150
Case: Elite 310/311 @ ~ R300
HDD: * this can make or break your budget completely. Currently I don't know of any 1TB drives for under R900 really. I've seen 2TB USB 2 externals going for R1000 at like Makro though.

Total (excl HDD + screen + Windows): ~ R4650

Oddly I play Bf3 on a q8200, 4gigs ram and a HD4890. On auto detect the game wants to run everything on high. I have a mixture of medium to low. For the most part (except Gulf of Oman and extreme distances) the game runs fine.

Hey Hey

He is dropping off the laptop in an hour. /sighs

Thanks for all the options you okes... so far all very nice specs.

I would also go towards an i3 rather than AMD - I am biased towards Intel I admit, but the AMDs seems to be nicely priced. Are the AMDs better value price / performance wise or is it all a much of a muchness ??
