BIS and BBM for non-BlackBerries plan vetoed at RIM

Interestingly Onavo, a startup is just starting to look at plans to limit data use for Service providers (Curently Free) but I suspect that they want to build a customer base and then approuch SP's with paying plans simular to what BIS does.

They currently using a proxy service with data compression to reduce data usage.

As for his plans:
I do think it should have worked as I know of plenty users Including me, that would have paid the R60 for BIS like data on my Android/iPhone.

Currently my iPhone is without data on Pay-as-you-go as there is no way I am gonna feed it with top up's, but I would not have thought twice on getting it a R60 p/m subscription. My Android is on a Contract only because I need the data.

Allow me to say faking idiots, I would have used the service on my other platforms as well. Bunch of useless idiots RIM deserves to fail, idiotic narrow minded fools!

If BBM is priced at a similar price has Whatsapp it could do well

“I did my own reality check on where the entire company really is,” he said. “It is now very clear to me that substantial change is what RIM needs.”

Hahahahha...

I rememeber in January when he said "No big changes are needed", and everyone proceeded to point an laugh. :D

Very interesting. Will have to wait for ICS to arrive on RAZR though to test it. Would be interesting to see if the MNO's partner with them...or implement their own compression tech. I know that TMobile in the US employs comression now. Read a thread where US people were having a hissy fit cause they noticed pictures on web browsing was being compressed lol

Wow! RIM never ceases to amaze these days. The company is actually voted into oblivion by those who stand to lose the most.

I will gladly pay to get BBM on my non-BB devices. BBM will make RIM a fortune when people not using BB's are asked to pay for it. Sad when something so good cannot be used to its full potential. It's like these newly minted bling-bling millionaires buying rare masterpieces.

I fully agree with you.

Let them suffer.

This was a simple and effective plan to net RIM an absolute SHED LOAD of cash.... remove the device restriction and have bbm available to ppl on the "data" plan.... holy crap.. I would have jumped at that option....

But limit me to using a BB, and I'll make another plan, I dislike BB's intensely...

To little too late I am afraid! Thanks to whatsapp no one will pay for BBM on a Android or iOS, a few months ago they might of but not now, and to had salt to the wound everyone is leaving BlackBerry devices for Android devices anyways....

RIM is a sinking ship.....

The big part of this story, for RIM's financial health, was RIM allowing the use of it's network to non-RIM products. Which would have been a hectic shift for them, and could have possibly brought in a lot of revenue.
BBM was just a part of the package. But people are going on about BBM for some reason...?

I dont want BIS. I just want BBM. So many people I know are on it and the alternatives are not as good. I frequently have issues with Whatsapp that I never experienced with BBM.

Screw BBM (its a nice added extra) I would have wanted the BIS... that is Blackberrys ONLY saving grace anymore.. their phones are shyte... but a fixed monthly fee for data and such is a wonderful thing.

You will find that if VC and MTN and such release competitively priced "uncapped" price plans... BB will die quite quickly in this country.
