Raspberry Pi starts shipping

Seems there are lots of little Raspberrys scattered around the bottom of Africa.

Even Robert Mugabe has one :D:D

@Nerf

Debian Squeeze 443 MB
Arch Linux ARM 202 MB
QtonPi 741 MB

These are the official ones from here.

I just checked, I registered on the 9th of March (late I know).

The last email I received was on the 8th of May...
This week there’s more good news on availability of Raspberry Pi’s from RS and Allied Electronics. We’ve invited the next 4,000 people in our queue...

Raspberry Pi Type B Single Board Computer US$35.00 US$35.00
Running Total US$35.00
Standard Delivery (Despatch expected within 3 week(s)) US$8.02
Order total US$43.02

now the wait starts :P

There are other devices around, better-looking than the Raspberry Pi and also run Android as well as Linux. I am tired of waiting for this non-event. I registered on the day it was announced and was told my delivery would be the first batch. Still waiting.

MK802 micro-PC runs Android 4.0 and Linux for $74

Small and inexpensive mini computers have generated a lot of attention in recent months. While the Raspberry Pi started shipping after being delayed by manufacturing problems, the more expensive Cotton Candy device is still only available for pre-order. Now, another contender has arrived in the form of the MK802 micro-PC.

The MK802 features a 1.5GHz AllWinner A10 processor, 512MB of RAM and WiFi connectivity. The AllWinner A10 is an ARM Cortex A8 CPU with a MALI400 graphics processing unit. The device comes pre-loaded with Android 4.0 and features an HDMI output that is capable of 1080p decoding, two USB connectors (a micro USB port and a regular port with USB host mode) and a microSD card slot.

The device is available for $74 (ÂŁ46) and a Linux distribution such as Ubuntu, Debian or Fedora could be installed on it from the microSD card. When using the provided version of Android, users will have to rely on third party sources for applications as Google's Play store is not included.

Will be interesting to see which of the Raspberry Pi or this MK802 is more successful. I suspect the MK802 due to it's installed Android 4 OS, and the fact that LINUX can be loaded on it...

The Pi's are shipping out as we speak, the demand outstripped the supply many times over - you cannot expect them to just pull out 200 000 Pi's from thin air. There is no use trying to compare the MK802 (or any other AllWinner A10) that is a end-user/consumer product with the Pi that is clearly more of a development board/project like your Arduino's.

Also keep in mind that they RPi foundation is an NPO - they aren't gearing for massive output to make extra cash. They are manufacturing at a rate at which they are comfortable.

The anecdote is that the member's of the RPi foundation put their homes on mortage to finance the early production. In the middle of Feb they announced RS/Farnell as driving the manufacture and distribution. That is about 13 weeks, and in the electronics industry achieving a 13 weeks leadtime would leave you feeling remarkable, esp considering the single source Broadcom chip and the multifold increase in orders over that anticipated.

Further the margins on the RPi means that there is little money to allocate to the area's that slow down production.

At $74 (+_ R740) you can start looking at embedded Atom motherboards.
