Friend needs a new camera and he asked me for recommendations and any good deals out there.
Would be preferred if he can buy it from a shop in Pietermaritzburg so places like game, makro etc would be good but if there are other places with good deals he will also look into it.

He had a Olympus C-8080 which he was pretty good at using and have been on some photography courses so a DSLR would be cool and if he could use his existing CF cards even better.

Tell your mate to look at the classifieds for a Canon 40D or even an older 20D. They should be around those sort of prices and they also use CF cards. My old 20D is now being used by my SIL for some wedding photography and it's still producing some really great shots.

I'm sure I can get him to push his budget a little. I doubt he would opt for second hand.

He's also looking at bridge cameras but I would prefer it if he didn't.

If your friend wants a decent new DLSR he would probably have to look in the R8000 price bracket. That would include a standard camera lens and a 200mm lens. For R5000 he could buy a decent bridge camera, personally I would recommend a Sony.

Doesn't look like there's too much on at Game and Makro this week. Game has a Canon 500d twin lens at R5k, but the second lens is the Canon 75-300mm, which is not too good. They also have a Canon 550d starter bundle at R6.5k.

Yeah, beginning to think the same thing. I'll have a chat with him tonight. Hopefully the Sharks win & he's had a few beers in him to make the sell easier :D

Noticed the same thing while browsing. Hopefully he has a bit of time on his side.

I see Makro has a Canon 600d twin lens bundle (2nd lens being the 55-250mm) which is what I'd go for, but that's way over budget (R9.5k).

NEX 5 is R6grand? I was looking into buying it. Or might have been the NEX 3. It's one of them anyway.

Was looking at the NEX-7 which seems awesome.

I'm also thinking 600d, but seeing the sharks lost I'm only gonna call him tomorrow to explain to him to add 4k to his budget :D

He can get the 600D starter kit (18-55mm IS II lens) at ORMS Direct for R6895
Then he at least starts with a half decent DSLR camera body and can add lenses as he goes.

If he's looking for a once of investment that "does everything" then a decent bridge camera will be a better route.
Even cheap DSLR lenses are not that cheap for a middle class earner (usually R2000 to R10000 bracket).

Thanks for the help people but he jumped the gun and got a D5100 kit from Game yesterday. His local Game was out of stock so he ordered it from a Game about 2km from me and asked me to go pick it up. Will let you guys know what he got.

Edit: He got the following for R7999,
Nikon D5100 body
Nikkor 18-55mm VR
Nikkor 55-200mm VR
Lexar 4gb S.D card
Adobe Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements v10
Shoulder bag
