"Pirate miners", often armed and dangerous, have taken over parts of South Africa's gold mines and are helping to plunder them of R1,8-billion in illicit bullion each year.

They have used explosives to blast their way through concrete barriers built to keep them away from their target - the gold-bearing ore - and have been discovered living beneath the surface for periods as long as a month, supplied with food and water by their accomplices.
