Child Monitoring Software?

My son is now at an age where he is starting to search the net for things that I am not comfortable with right now. My main concern that there is some pretty awful stuff out there that I don't want him exposed to just yet.

I'm not seeking a debate into the merits of monitoring, I'm merely querying the collective MyBB knowledge base for their opinions on reliable software to help me manage my children's internet usage, especially considering that it is just not possible to sit there and watch him all the time.

I'm giving Verity a try. So far it's doing what it says on the tin, however I'm looking for something that perhaps has some decent filters that are dynamically updated. I don't mind paying for software.

I'm using a black list on my squid proxy at home, but this is not going to be practical for me much longer, hence me rather wanting a tool to install directly on the kids PC, as well as their grandparents machines (cuz the little bugger has been searching the net for porn on his grandparent's machines after school).

Any suggestions?

You might as well just get it over with right away:

Send him a link to lolshock.com

He will NEVER go on the internet again.

(in case anyone does not understand, that link is NSFW. And not safe for most people's brains either)

You are not gona stop him.he will find a way if he realy wants to.if you cut off the internet he wil just get if from friends

To be blunt, you need to guide him rather than restrict him. If he cant find it on his own pc he will simply find it elsewhere.

So yea, while I would limit the very bad, I would leave some holes to stuff that's not so bad.

No offense to anyone, but browsing stuff like that from a young age did me no harm :) But I guess it affects different persons differently...

The problem is that he is tech-savvy like I was - I always knew how to sidestep my dad's security measures.

the ultimate cure for searching sex stuff.

2 girls 1 cup.

may even change his sexual orientation...

Next time, just add, this is a porn site...I was in the office and could've had random people next to me. Not that I am interested in those kinda sites.

Is this even allowed? Forum administrator? a young kid could click on that link and the link coming from this forum is bad rep for myBB

Didn't you read that bit in brackets? Kids under 18 aren't meant to be on MyBB.

I did read that bit in brackets, the name of the link doesn't explain the content of the site... Kids under 18 aren't meant to smoke or get drunk, so that's a poor excuse.

Well like looking at dirty sites, poor parenting is to blame for that being allowed.

For what it's worth, I installed the k9 web protection that ghoti linked, does the trick and it better than verity IMHO.

I have mcafee internet security on the PCs and laptops at home. It has child protection built in, seems to work well - bases access on which windows user is logged in at the time - administrator defines the age category of each windows user.

http://netparent.co.za

Automatic filter and it alerts you via sms or email about your child's activity. AFAIK they also have it for cellphones now (not sure though, buddy of mine's application)
