I was hopeing to get a Sony Smartwatch for my new Sony Xperia S but thanx to a recent Gizmodo article think I am glad I did not do the impulse buy as I think the Pebble will be a much better idea/device

Sony SmartWatch: http://www.sonymobile.com/us/products/accessories/smartwatch/ (Android)
Pebble: http://getpebble.com/ (iOS + Android)
Meta Watch http://www.metawatch.org/ (iOS + Android)

Apple's Nano might also be worth mentioning as some people turn it into a watch using 3rd party straps like http://lunatik.com/

So is there other gadget geeks here that are interested in getting a watch that links to your phone or would you stick to things like the Nano?

I investigated watches but there was always something that put me off. I am sure in the next two years something good will get released.
The Nano I like as you can remove it from a strap and use it while jogging as mp3. The reason I didn't buy is it doesn't have its own app store, no GPS and it was released in Sept 2010.
There are plenty of Android ones but none that strike my fancy e.g. Motorola's MotoACTV, Sony SmartWatch,WIMM,i'm Watch,Sony LiveView

It's bad enough having to charge my phone, my tablet, my laptop, ...
Adding this complication to a watch is IMO, one step too far.

That is why the pebble watch looks promising.

Still charging every ~week is still going to be a pain... I personally prefer mechanical movements.
Unless of course we get batteries that last a year or more.

The one week battery life is worst case scenario and its with Bluetooth 2.1, they said they will release a software update to enable Bluetooth 4.0, and the power savings of that will be quite substantial. The Sony Smart watch went from 4 days battery life on Bluetooth 2.1 to 2 weeks with Bluetooth 4.0.

I understand and can appreciate the improvement, yet it for me just seems like too much of a compromise from standard watches which required almost no effort in that regard.

Hence I'll stick to my mechanical watch, and wait for substantial improvements (I really don't need another gadget that needs to be charged; I much prefer I had less).

Well to be honest, if you are only buying the device to use it as a watch then yes, its pointless. If you want it for the other features then its worth the money.

Personally I get that view and respect it.

Only problem is my mechanical watch can not tell me who is calling in a meeting or allow me to jump to the next song while out and about (Do this often and no the crappy music controle on iOS cords is simply not enough.)

For that extra functionality I am willing to get a device and charge it once a week.

My phone, my tablet and my computer currently do this for me; really don't need another gadget for this -- unless of course that gadget can replace one or more of them.

I am not gonna whip out a tablet on the beach to change my playlist, thank you very much :p

I also like the fact that if my phone vibrates in my pocket when in a meeting I don't have to be a dick about it and whip it out to see who called or what sms I got, when a simple glance at my wrist can give me peace of mind.

I'm holding off in anticipation for the iWatch.... ;)

You mistake my hesitance around the tech as me not being interested.

I am, but the combination of battery life and limited functionality is just too much of a compromise.

I tend to turn off sounds / vibrate when I am with a customer i.e. Like you I think ist rude to play with gadgets in a meeting.
