(Another) Plasma vs. LCD/LED Thread

I am a total new on this, so maybe someone can help me out.

I have, well, had a normal box(CRT?) TV in my bedroom, and all of a sudden, it decided to die, everyting is inverted, and the ppl are green :sick:. I have a LCD Full HD (20") TV, that we decided to put in the room for the time being, but here is the thing, we cant see anything on it, the TV is situated in front of the bed, but it is kinda high up, so watching it from that angle, makes everthing on screen dark. I *think* I read somewhere, that plasma has a better "veiwing angles", is this correct? or will the plasma do the same, or can it be because the 20" we have, is a cheaper model, will the more expensive ones do the same?

Lastly, if plasma is the answer, I also recall somewhere, that you dont get "small" plasma's, i dont really want to put in a massive TV in the bedroom. What is the smallest plasma's you get?

in general, which are best (LED/LCD or Plasma), basically using it for SD tvrips that i stream from the xbox

Bud and I know the usual suspect will come here and say otherwise, LED is the only way to go.
Thank god I never bought plasma.
I have the LED is my room and have it on. Energy saver, its bright and awesome.
When I take it off, it feels like I am in the movie.
Even brighter and more vibrant.
Plasma is yesterday
 
I was hell bent on getting a plasma, then I got to makro and they were sold out, and there was a 42" LG LED, which I took.
Must say I'm not disappointed at all (except that my SD avi's look like crap, but it is being remedied :) )

Plasma will usually be better for viewing from an angle.

That's a bit over the top, drama queen. There are those of us who's perfectly satisfied with our plasma purchases and funny thing, the world hasn't ended yet.
 
What you have is a really cheap LCD... I can view any of my LCD's from any angle.
 
Just got a ES7500 LED LCD - and the quality is amazing when compared to my previous LCD, vibrant colour - and with the various "tricks" they employ in dealing with dark scenes, I'd have trouble justifying a plasma purchase over this.

Yea, the LCD that I have, is a really cheap one. Its one we bought for our daughter to watch the occasional cartoon on in her bedroom. Will more expensive LCD/LED be better at a angle?

Even the pretty cheap ones are good these days, just go into a shop and check.
 
The viewing angles on plasma are better than LCD. The smallest plasmas are however 42" (or 43" for Samsung). Not sure it that will work in your room?

Why not tilt your LCD so that you are looking at it at the correct viewing angle? I'd definitely get a mount that can tilt if yours can't. The vertical view angle is the most important.

An LED TV is an LCD TV with LED back-lighting. LED back-lit LCDs use the same TFT LCD matrix technology as CCFL back-lit LCD. Picture quality is not dependent on back-lighting type. In fact, LED edge lighting is worse.

Only LED back-lit LCD using local dimming and/or full array LED, offers an advantage over their common, run-of-the-mill LED edge-lit counterparts, which are no better than CCFL back-lit LCDs. These special, high end LED-LCDs are very expensive, and trust me, the chances proponents of "LED TV being the best!" have actually seen these LED-LCDs, is extremely minuscule.

This is a typical response from an ignorant buyer who goes to their local Game/Makro to oogle TVs and more importantly base their decisions on which tech is the best. Game/Makro/etc. are inherently flawed because they have bright shop lighting and aisle viewing distances: These are not realistic representations of most people's home conditions, so when people judge in bright stores from aisle viewing distances, it is a complete fallacy. It's a vicious cycle, after the viewing and succumbing to all the marketing gimmick, you now have non technical people punting what they think is the best tech, all based on numerous false pretences.

That must really be a wonderful TV, congrats! The crux of the argument though, is that it probably costs around R15,000 for 46". For that price, we are talking 59" plasma.

The smallest plasma you will find is 43".

You are quite right about plasma viewing angles, but you shouldn't have a problem with a modern LCD's viewing angles and the advancement of IPS and PVA LCD technologies. My modern 32" FHD LCD is quite excellent.

The bottom line, is that 43" plasma in particular, suits what you intend watching. It is the only viable upgrade for people coming from CRT who appreciate SD content and it's good quality on old CRT box TVs.

I am quite happy to explain why, if you'd like to know, and haven't yet run off because of the misinformation spouted by someone who is only here because they cannot use Current Affairs as a platform for their bigotry any more, and quite honestly could not give one flying fish about your personal circumstances.
