Greetings MyBroadband Community

I am currently subscribed to MWEB's 4M Uncapped ADSL package. I have been experiencing frequent slow-downs on my connection since 10th June.

Symptoms:
1. While playing an online game, I experience stutters and huge delays at random time and intervals.
2. When I stream videos online (ex. YouTube) the grey-ish buffer bar would just stop momentarily and speeds up again in a short while.
3. When opening a website or clicking a link, the destination page sometimes would not load and my browser returns an error, however if I refresh, it would load instantly without any problems.
4. In all of the above situations my connection does NOT drop, the ADSL indicator on my router shows that the connection is healthy.

Self Troubleshooting Result:
- I already have the latest firmware for my ADSL router.
- I live about 4km away from the exchange so a few months ago I had Telkom force limited my line to 3MB according to the sticky I found on this forum.
- My connection has been going smoothly with 15-17db SNR and 60-62db Line Attenuation.
- I ruled out problems with my ISP after I tried with a friend's Afrihost account as well as a 1GB pre-paid cap from WebAfrica and experienced the same problem on all accounts, this was done on multiple computers at home as well(1 desktop and 3 laptops).

After all the testing and researching I'm now left with 2 things: Cancer on my router or line fault, and I'd like your input on this. From all the symptoms above which one do you think it is? I would like some opinions before I log a line fault and have them come over and find nothing, or go and buy a new router while my old one still works. I might have missed something which I could've done before coming here for help, if that's the case, please point me in the right direction.

Sorry for the wall of text. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for you time!

Kind regards

Now I'm not sure what router you are using, but 60dB attenuation is possible to synch at 3meg, but never with 15dB SNR. To give you an idea, I have an anttenuation of 59.5dB , synch at 3012Kbps and have an SNR of only 5.2 db.

It might be that you are synching too high to be stable. Phone Telkom and ask them to limit you to 2.5 meg for a day, unplug the phone when you do it and plug the ADSL modem directly into the socket with no filter. After ADSL synchs with the DSLAM, then plug your phone back in. See if it is stable. If it is for a day, tomorrow bump it up to 2.8meg and try again.

If you have the same issues at 2.5meg, maybe try a different ISP account for a day. Email the webmaster at openweb.co.za and get a gold uncapped trial account for a day and see how it goes.
