Thread: Throtteling vs Ping

  1. #1

    Question Throtteling vs Ping

How does Throttling of your bandwidth effect your latency(ping)? Does it effect it at all?

    Default

    No it should not.

    Throttling is per protocol.

Ping uses the ICMP protocol, normally that would not be throttled or shaped.
The theoretical capacity of a Boeing 747 filled with Blu-ray Discs is 595,520,000 Gigabytes, resulting in a 245,829 Gbit/s flight from New York to Los Angeles.

    No
Throttling is dropping your total available bandwidth.

It should not affect round-trip times unless you are transferring at near your speed limit and traffic has to queue.

so lets see if I get this right using my scenario as an example :

If I have mtn lite 3gig uncapped. With my 3gigs I have a ping of say 200 when playing a game online. Will this drop when my 3gigs is finished and I get throttled to 256kb?

If not, then in theory Throttling wont have any effect on gaming right?

Depends whether you are using anywhere close to 256kb/s of bandwidth.

Then again, you're talking MTN so all bets are off.
