Neotel vs Telkom: 2012 call costs comparison

The fact that it is cheaper to call Telkom from Neotel than it is to call Telkom from Telkom is massively telling in my opinion.

The problem is market share. I can call telkom numbers off-peak for free up to an hour. That's a HUGE saving compared to per-minute billing. I call cell numbers from my cellphone using my free minutes(cellc). Neotel has too much to compete with.

I think on the prepaid side neofail is hitting Telscum for a six. Call rates are the same as postpaid and you still get the off-peak neo to neo for free.

Exactly what share of residential subscribers does Neotel have? Are they even interested in servicing old residential areas (copper wire country)?

It strikes me that there's no benefit in considering them before they have a decent market share and there's a good chance you can take advantage of the Neotel to Neotel rates.

If only Neotel was serious about providing services. Our office ordered a fiber connection from them almost 2 months ago. When following up last week, we were informed everything has been approved, and that the equipment has been requested. But they are now waiting on the project manager to inform them when it can be expected.

This as opposed to my Telkom residential line at our new place that was sorted within a week and a half (line and ADSL). While this is still not quite first world, it's significantly better than Neotel at the moment.
Also, as ThatOtherGuy said, with add on bundles, Telkom can in certain instances definately provide very good value for money.

I need ADSL and Neotel does reach my house in JHB anyway, and reading all the forums on MBB I think I will/have to give them a miss.

They are pinning their hopes (and future in the residential market) on LLU.

I did not even read the article. Until Neotel gets access to the LL there is no point for me that Neotel even exists. DoCfail...

BTW: When is the next 'deadline/milestone' for LLU again?

Joke:
Q: How many ANC's does it take to deploy affordable internet to the whole of SA?

A: Division by zero error!

That's right! They have done eff-all for internet in this country. Private industry is driving every bit of progress we have achieved so far.

Why is anyone being compared to Telkom? Do they have access to a fixed line network that I don't know about?

We cannot get Telkom in our area, thanks to cable theft, got neotel and it just works for calls most months we just pay R99 doing the exact amount of calls we would do on telkom. So yeah their pricing is pretty good, they need to advertise that offer more.

Still happy that I move my phone line for home and business away from Telkom. Telkom fees were expensive, and somehow I always had to buy extra data during the month. Lets not forget about the times that the phone were off as well. For 3 years now, no problems with Neotel. Thanks Neotel!

Why is there an article on neotel pricing? Basically there are a number of options these days, of which neotel is just one and not one I believe sticks out particularly either.

And your point is?

You are comparing apples with cucumbers. Not a valid comparison.

A fibre connection (from anyone) requires a fibre to be laid. This usually means that a trench has to be dug. and all the delays and wayleaves involved in that process. Yes, it needs a Project Manager. Yes, it can easily take months.

"Line and ADSL" means a copper line from Telkom which usually means using an existing copper pair in an existing cable, either on a pole or in an existing conduit. The question you should be asking is why it took so long?

Try ordering a fibre connection from Telkom and see what delivery time they quote, for a valid comparison. I'd be interested in the answer.
