Hi friends,

I am still using Windows XP. Recently I have been considering upgrading to a new Operating System but with Windows 8 so close to being released was wondering if it were worth waiting for or is it a better option to get Windows 7 now? If i do get Windows 7 I would be for a Home option I guess. I am also just considering the reception of Windows 8, i mean, Vista sounded great but boy am i pleased i did not go get it when it came out. I am sure you understand what i mean. Thanks for your advice.

Unless you are a power user there was no reason not to get Vista provided you were getting a new system and not upgrading. The people that complain are power users in general and just like to complain :p. /hides

Personally, I would wait and see how Win8's release and reception goes and then I would make a decision. You are gonna feel pretty silly if Win8 turns out to be great while you are stuck with win7. Besides, Win7's price might drop.

Download a legit copy of Win7, try it until it expires. Do the same for Win8 beta or whatever it's called.

I think windows 8 is going to be the next "Vista", cause all the people who installed it doesn't like it.

I will be staying with Windows 7 till Windows 9 is here. lol

Cant remember where I saw it but if you buy windows 7 now, then you get a significant discount on windows 8 when it's released. Personally I'm happy with 7 and don't really see any benefits to 8 but that's just me.

I would get Windows 7, im not too impressed with Windows 8.

Bescides, if you buy Windows 7 and want to upgrade to windows 8, you pay R150 extra.

Just get Windows 7 and skip Windows 8. Windows 8 is going to be another Vista failure.

Well, if you're still using an OS form eleven years ago, why not wait another 11? but then a new one might come along in 12 years.... Otherwise just read up, and get the good ones when they come out. Like Windows 7. It's generally every second one that's good. Hit and miss. Examples:

Windows 95: Good
98: Pretty buggy and slow.
98SE: Good, Windows 98 without all the problems.
ME: Horrible abomination
XP: Greatest OS yet (for its time)
Vista: Horrible abomination with fancy graphics
7: XP updated for modern times, proper 64-bit support unlike XP, andthe greatest PC OS to date.
8: Yet to be seen, but I'm going with the pattern here. It looks like just Windows 7 with a silly touch-screen interface stuck on and severely dumbed down.

Is the Release Preview worse than Windows 7 and how?

I dont like Windows 8, I tried out the Consumer Preview, it was slow as hell. I also did not like the Metro Interface, it would be nice for the tablet, but I dont like it on PC. Yes I know you can switch from Metro to the classic layout, but there was no start button on the taskbar (I had to get a software to place a start button). I dont know what they call it, but I did not like the User Interface when you open my computer or Documents or music, it looked more like Office 2010. This is just my opinion.

I heard they were going to take off Windows Aero from Windows 8.

Only if you get Win 7 Pro (or better) pre-installed. The OPs talking about getting a Home version which doesn't exist in Win 8.

Edit: qualifying systems will probably come with a upgrade voucher so check before purchasing.

@grumpops - I apologize for any confusion but this blog post is pre-announcing how customers will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro and the price when it becomes generally available. When Windows 8 becomes generally available, Windows.com will have the information you seek. Windows 8 is not yet generally available. As I mentioned above, we continue to drive toward the RTM milestone for Windows 8.

if your PC is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 you will qualify to download an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99 in 131 markets

We've seen this this type of offer before and it's usually not available in SA :(

And then there is the guy that rates ME to be a better OS than XP.

What?

EDIT: @OP: Don't take this Hamster guys advice, rather stay with XP than go ME ( :D ). My advice, go Windows 7..... or even beter, go Linux.

If the PC is old buy a new one and you'll get 7 "for free".
