Default What medical aid for R1000?

Hi guys i was wondering if you could help me find a good value for money medical aid, i am currently on a cheap option, but I am so sick of going to certain doctors, I don't like this prime cure plans, they seem to always give you the crappy doctors and make it so difficult for you to claim things, i just want a plan where i can go to any doctor and give them my card and it is paid for, even with emergencies, last night i went for a drip due to a migrain and turns out i went to the wrong network hospital therefor i had to pay for it, i just want something with ease of access, i have no health issues, so I dont have to worry too much about chronic medication etc. also.

Discovery Key Core with the add on benefit.

This is a great plan for low earners. Doctors and perscribed meds are covered in full however you still have to go to certain doctors and hospitals but they are decent.

They only cover 100% of the doctor/hospital bill. But that Discovery's 100% and most doctors charge more than this.
If you do take that, get separate GAP cover from another company.

Also you could get away with Medihelp Dimension Prime 1 which is a pretty allround hospital cover, but no general GP visits, etc. for something like R700pp.

I recently was forced to take medical at the new company I work at. I have the Delta Core something something something. Costs just a bit less than R1k and the rest of my medical aid allowance I'm going to push into a savings account. I rarely get sick or have to go to the doctor, so my own "Medical Savings Account" (that actually gets interest and is in full control by me) should cover those expenses easily. Then I have hospital cover for emergency and "in case" stuff. My MSA should sufficiently cover any type of shortfall and/or pay for a nice vacation

what do you mean by ONLY covers 100% of the doctor/hospital bill ? how can a doctor charge more than what is on their bill ? If the bill says 50 bucks, then its 50 bucks..... no ?

No. Discovery covers 100% medical aid rate. Some doctors/specialists charge more than this. In those cases, they will only cover up to the rate. However a key plan means you must go to their doctors and hospitals who are contracted in to charge at 100% medical aid tarrif only, so it should be a non-issue IF you go to the facilities they tell you too.

    1. I did not know one can get forced by an employer to take a certain medical aid. What happened to freedom of association/choice?

    2. Can you access money from your MSA and take it for other purposes ??? How does that work ?

    1. For this, usually to get the most benefit, you go with the choice of the company you work for. But you can still say no to that and just do your own, and have them add the money on to your salary.

    2. I am with discovery, and no I can't access my MSA at all. The only way Discovery will pay it out is a) I downgrade to a plan without a MSA but then I can't move back to a MSA based plan for at least 6 months, or b) I cancel my Discovery medical aid completely, in which case it will pay out as well. For now I have about R16000 in my MSA, though thats not enough to make me leave this plan.

ok, so the post was incorrect in that it confused medical aid rates with the doctors/hospital bill, which are 2 seperate prices.
