Forgot to mention ... there are strong rumours () that iOS6 will have an improved Maps function, which may include turn by turn navigation. That will eliminate the need for a GPS app like TomTom.

An Apple rumour ... one has to take it with a pinch of salt.

That's not a rumour, it is in the beta.

Does the TomTom app have the same limitation as their hardware device software that requires picking the city first when searching?

Yes. The software is pretty much identical.

do you think the live traffic is worth it? I might try the live traffic for a month just to see.
I have a built-in Tom Tom in my car which can't take Live and I still bought the phone app just to get Live - it works really well!

Only limitation is that it only gives traffic info on primary and secondary roads - sometimes a secondary road has traffic and it tries to re-route you to a tertiary road which has EVEN MORE traffic. In general it's excellent tho!!

Around the same time they launch the new phone... Most pundits' best guess is September/October.

nope, is waze nice? How is navigon in comparison to tom-tom and waze?
September is still a bit of time away.. maybe ill just go splurge and get it. Are there more features though on the full gps system vs the iPhone app?

I have a little Tomtom Start permanently mounted in my car (actually screwed down onto the dash, not using the sucker that comes off whenever it's a hot day) and I love it. I never need to think where my phone is, the GPS is always there, all the time. A USB extension cable carefully routed around the upholstery makes it permanently charged-up. It simply is part of the car.

But each to his own. Just do the math, though. The cost of the app, the cradle, the car charger, how much does that end up as? For just over a grand you can have a standalone gadget.
