Using LAPTOP as a WIFI router

Hi Guys,

Im not sure if this is the right thread to post on but could anyone who has got it right please please PLEASE explain to me just why none of the Virtual router softtware (Connectify etc) works for my Laptop? Maryfi and Virtual Router simply refuse to even create a hotspot - telling me they cant start and Connectify - who i had high hopes for actually created one, it worked, but then told me it didnt have a net connection?? Im trying to get my Galaxy S3 Android to connect to to my laptop at home using ADSL as opposed to buying a router.

ANy suggestions would be really really welcome.

Make sure that you run those applications with Administrative privileges.

Secondly, you don't need to use any of those applications, but you'll have to use a LAN cable to give the laptop Internet access via your ADSL modem.
With ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), you need 2 network adapters: 1 for LAN & 1 for Internet.

Before you setup ICS, you need to setup a WiFi AP on your laptop first.

To setup ICS, you need to go to your Network Connections in Control Panel, go to Properties of your LAN connection, because that is the Internet connection that you want to share. Next, go to the Sharing tab and then enable sharing ;)
 
Assuming your laptop is connected via ethernet and can connect to the internet, you'll need to create an ad-hoc network and then share the internet connection via wireless. Here's how to create the former (it's for iPhone, but I assume it will work fine with your Galaxy):

Then you just setup ICS. In Windows 7, it does everything for you. Just "Set up a new connection or network" and select ad-hoc network, and complete the steps (it will even enable ICS automatically if you select the option).

A few things to note about the above: I couldn't get my iPhone to connect using WPA2-Personal, but it worked fine with WEP. Also, it took about 10 seconds after connecting to realise that it also had access to the internet.

Thanks so much for your reply - WRT WiFi AP - how do i do that (will google in the meantime) I have ICS setup but not before i setup the WiFi AP so maybe thats the trouble.

Not sure how to run with priveledges - I am the only user so i assumed i have been doing that? i'll check it out too.

@Denouncer - awesome advice thank you. However - in my findings of late Android have this bladdie problem which is causing all my issues and the problem is that they dont connect to the Ad-Hoc's that Windows 7 creates. Stupid phone. Lovely phone. Haha....
