I'll wait until just before the WC 2010 until I buy an HDTV (either in the form of a LCD or Plasma) as SA doesn't support HD broadcasts yet.

As far as technology goes, I basically just buy whatever seems best and affordable at the time.
Right now its a 40+" HD ready LCD for under R20k

In the mood for some retail therapy, I was looking for the Sony Bravia KLV S40A10 at all the SA online stores I could find:

In the Star yesterday (edit: sorry, Friday - I didn't realize it was after 12) was an ad for the whole range of BRAVIA:
V40 @ R25999, S40 @ R19999.
It included all the consumer electronics type stores like Hirsch's, Foto Cats, Digital Experience etc...
Maybe take a drive down to Sandton City tomorrow (Fotocats is on the bridge between S/City and N. Mandela Square)

Well there's probably still a trailer trash market for it, don't think they can afford LCD's yet.

Still begs the question why online stores are such a rip-off.

I'm not sure...but prolly 'cos they don't carry inventory and have to buy from a distributor (with added markup).
BTW... The V40 is the one to buy if you can go for the extra 6K... Better colour and HDMI. I think that the S40 is about to be replaced with a newer version...

Caveat Emptor and all that, but IMO the main reason to buy on-line is to source the best price, particularly on hi-tech gear. Seems crazy that you can get in your car and pick it up cheaper at the local mall.
Got the V40 from Cats in Sandton. Arrives tomorrow.

I think that this has more to do with Sony's distribution than the online retailers. The channels that can move the most product are likely to get the best pricing. Also I think the local online stores try to make too much money...Caveat Emptor and all that, but IMO the main reason to buy on-line is to source the best price, particularly on hi-tech gear. Seems crazy that you can get in your car and pick it up cheaper at the local mall.

I represent WebAntics Online (www.webantics.co.za) - one of the online stores that came up in your discussion. I just wanted to give you a little behind the scenes info.
99% of online stores are all basically getting their stock from the same Distributor who in turn get their products from overseas manufacturers eg. LG, Sony, HP etc. They buy in bulk according to expected demand at a certain exchange rate and we buy on demand from customers at the rate determined by the distributor. We all basically get much the same price and we sell on at a price that covers costs, overheads, commission etc for each store. These expenses obviously differ from store to store.
99% of online stores also only sell products that ARE genuine items (i.e. not grey imports) and are imported into SA through LG/Sony/HP etc channels by our distributors. This means when you have a problem with something you have bought, you can go through the official channels to have it repaired/replaced etc through official channels. When you buy it from one of these electronic type stores, most often (not saying all of the time and I have to be careful here) they will just replace your purchase with another as it does not carry the genuine warranty as it was imported through grey channels. I have heard from some clients/friends where they've gone back to the Electronics Store with their faulty printer/notebook/whatever and that product is no longer offered/sold out and the store is unable to replace the item. The client is then left with a reduced credit and having to fork out again to get another product. If they do repair it, it is normally done through an unofficial channel or by their own guys.
We are governed by the prices set out by our distributors according to current exchange rates. Some change almost daily, others almost monthly. Prices have risen substantially in the last couple of months and then also costs associated with transport etc. We don't buy in bulk so we cannot get the same discounts as those genuine High street Customer Stores who purchase 300 units in one go but we do always try to give a good deal.
Prices loaded on websites are as current as possible but with the change in exchange rates, sometimes we lose on the sale and sometimes we win. Our dilemma is trying to minimize these so we don't lose or don't overcharge clients. Not always easy but hey that's the nature of our business.
Always remember with buying online - shop around. It mostly comes down to price but also depends on delivery time, delivery cost, payment charges, service etc etc. It is the nature of the market. Hope that answers some of your questions.

Thanks for the explanation, Grieg. I guess the onus is on the purchaser, but I do feel that unsuspecting buyers may end up paying a great deal more for certain goods than they need to.
As for stores that sell grey goods, I hope to avoid them like the plague. However, the trend these days is not to return items to the store (unless it breaks soon after purchase and will be replaced), but to the distributer/manufacturer. In most cases, this is a quicker and less painful route. Some even fetch and deliver.
Some stores offer extended warranties at a price. I never take this route, because my gut always warns me that I'm being hustled.
The V40 arrived. Brilliant. Although my kids had far more fun playing with the packaging than they did watching the TV.
