Thread: Ipad3

    Default Ipad3

I have a existing 3G modem contract that is due to expire end of this month. I am intrested in the Apple Ipad3 part of my upgrade.
Question 1: Will I be able to swap the one SIM between devices, example to take out the 3G sim and plug it from tablet back into modem device. I would still like the luxury of using this for dialup via my laptop.
Question 2: I believe the Ipad 3 do not have a USB slot. Is there a converter available and what is the cost.
Question 3: Would I be able to copy movies via this USB port in order to view on Ipad3.

    Many thanks.

    1) Yes but you'll need to hold on to the sim/micro-sim adapter
    2) There is a camera connection kit available that lets you do some things but not #3 on your list . . . well it does but not well.

If 2&3 are critical the iPad might not be the best solution for your needs.

EDIT - the ipad comes with a USB to 30 pin cable that you use to connect the ipad to your PC for syncing data including movies. You can also sync via wifi. What you cannot do is load movies directly from an external hdd or usb stick.

You will be able to do all those things. You can copy movies etc onto your iPad through iTunes. Or if you prefer you can use a program called iPad file viewer. You can copy movies, music, apps onto your iPad into the right folders. The connection for the iPad comes with a cable that connects to the USB of your PC. This is how you can access files on your iPad through USB.

You don't need a micro sim adapter, just put the micro sim in the 3G stick, it works. Well the adapter I had was really crappy, maybe yours is better.

If I put the microsim into my 3g dongle with out one it tends to relocate itself.

Also, you don't really need to swap the sim between the two devices. What you can do is setup a wi-fi hotspot on the iPad. This allows you to use the 3G connection on the iPad with any laptop or other device that has a wifi connection.
Its a pretty awesome feature. You can basically toss the 3G dongle.

Unfortunately that only works if a) the carrier supports tethering on the new iPad - not sure if any local ones do at this stage, or b) you jailbreak and buy an app.

In my experience the one thing I still really hate about the Ipad is that the download limit over 3g direct is 50mb. Now for most awesome apps/games its just not sufficient. I still find the best solution is to put in the extra bucks and get a mobile 3g router (battery life between 3-5 hours) if you have that you would be able to connect up to 5 devices over wifi to the mobile router. all problems solved.

Its the only way I can take advantage of my 8ta 10gb package. All your other points are fine. Using apps like airvideo and airtransfer further increase the ability of the ipad to recieve files without itunes or even connected to the pc.

I find the best way is to just tether my wifi only iPad to my iPhone... or any other device which has wifi hotspot functionality.

When you guys say micro sim adaptor, you're talking about the piece of plastic that you cut your micro sim out of right?

It's a little piece of plastic which makes a micro-Sim into a regular sim, but it's really not necessary for many devices.

Your best option is to ask you service provider for a dual SIM - that way your iPad and 3G dongle can be connected simultaneously and it all comes off your one account.
