Thread: 30m Ethernet Cable

    Default 30m Ethernet Cable

I'm looking for an Ethernet cable about 30m long that is safe to run through the roof.

What type of cable would it be and where can I get it for a decent price? Would it need to be custom built or can I buy it pre-made?

a normal straight cable will do, ask them to make you one at any computer shop. you`ll pay about R100-R200

You'll most probably be ripped off when buy a crimped cable, rather find a decent cable supplier and get yourself enough to connect the whole house(100m should be around R250). The only issue is a crimper but you shouldn't have too many issues finding a mate who has one

I'd prefer a crimped cable since I don't know how to crimp a cable and don't have a crimper either.

Esquire has some cheap networking tools. If you think you will be needing more than that one cable during the next few years buy yourself a crimping tool, connectors, etc and buy loose cable. Then google on how to crimp them. Companies that sell you the pre-crimped cables rip you off big time.

    CAT5e cable @ R6.60/m: http://www.hdcabling.co.za/cat5e-foi...eter-p-98.html
    CAT6 boot + RJ45 connector @ R2.95: http://www.hdcabling.co.za/cat6-boot...tor-p-228.html
    RJ45/11 tester @ R99: http://www.hdcabling.co.za/rj45-rj11...ble-p-392.html
    RJ45/11 crimping tool @ R79: http://www.hdcabling.co.za/rj45-rj11...les-p-169.html

This is everything you'll need, except for a diagram on how to select the order/colours.
These prices aren't the best out there, but at least it's a good start.

Crimping your own cables are definitely worth while in the long run, seeing that you don't need to drill large wholes for the big boots of pre-crimped cables.

The idiots/office next door to my office installed their switches and things in the hallway that is accessible to anyone with access to the shared office space, and they also installed fibre optic cables for who knows what reason.

Just go to your closest little computer shop and let them make it for you. Don't buy it at a retailer. It will cost you about R200 - R250 with no hassles. Why would you want to save 50c an then struggle to make the thing up yourself!?
