Thread: MWEB assigned me a different IP?

  1. #1

Default MWEB assigned me a different IP?

    Hey dudes.

So I decided to flash router tech firmware to my old Telkom Mega 105WR (Yes, I have three of them). everything went off without a hitch, router works fine.

I use MWEB as my ISP. 1mb uncapped. I usually end up with an IP of 41.XX.XX.XXX

what is odd, is that I am now receiving an IP of 197.87.XXX.XXX

If someone could clarify as to why that would be great. it's not exactly a major issue, I am just curious as to why I am receiving an IP in a completely different range.

I also thought that MWEB only had access to a certain range of IP's? mainly in the 41.XX.XXX.XXX region.

On my first line i have 197, second line 41, third line 41 and fourth line 197..... so it seems normal.

It indicates that you are The One.

Mweb owns various IP ranges and seems to allocate them randomly. Shouldn't have an effect on anything whatsoever.

    Corrected for you
The blocks 41/8, 102/8, 105/8, 196/8, 197/8 as well as some others are all allocated to Africa. Many South African ISPs have multiple blocks from those ranges.

There are about 600 different IP ranges for South Africa.

Seeing that you don't have a business ADSL account that would ensure that you have static IP address, Mweb can pretty much give you any public IP address they want.

yea it all depends on what Ip addresses are available in their pool of ranges / blocks of IP addresses they have...

I always thought it would have been simpler to assign countries ranges that were relatively close to one another, like international calling codes.

    Huh. Who knew.
