In relation to this threads I started:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-old-laptop-into-a-web-server-for-local-usage

I wanted to convert my old laptop to a web server, which I will use as the testing server. But, there is a small problem:

My old laptop is a Acer, the DVD Drive does not work anymore, so I cant copy the ISO i downloaded onto a CD and use the CD to Install. I want to make a bootable Flash drive, where the files needed to install Linux are there only. I want to format that laptop, make it to a 100% Linux PC.

How do I do this? What must I download to do this?

Thanks.

And your laptop must be able to boot from usb. Not all old pc's boot from usb.

3 years not old yet. It should be able to boot from flash.
I have a 6 year old HP thats boots from usb.

Somewhat unrelated, but I just found this piece of pure win on the debian wiki:

4.3. Preparing Files for USB Memory Stick Booting

To prepare the USB stick, you will need a system where GNU/Linux is already running
WTF

Handy Tip: I found that a usb formatted in fat (not fat 32) normally works. Which sometimes mean the flashdrive must not be beyond 4gig in size as the bigger flashdrives does not give the option for normal fat formatting.

Unetbootin as suggested by ponder allowed me to install Ubuntu on a machine with no CD/DVD drive and no USB boot.
