Thread: Gaming Laptop?

  1. #1

    Default Gaming Laptop?

I need to upgrade my PC, been putting this off for much too long. So I will have to, allmost upgrade everything.

So, I got some money comming my way end of the year and I was toying with the idea of getting myself a gaming laptop (like the guys on Big Bang Theory - Dell XPS).

Reasons: 1. Taking up less space
    2. Since I got a Xbox360 a few moths back, for most of my games, not everything needs to work on the PC(for those who will argue that point)
    3. Mobile

My budget will be between R10k and R15k and I'll be shopping for new or 2nd hand.

What different gaming laptops is there out there and what do you guys recommend and what do they cost?
Anyone got some experience on them?
If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.

Man, I've been looking at the same thing lately. My desktop has just become such a schlep lately. I spend more time maintaining it than I do playing it, and the lack of portability is starting to bother. Would be nice to just fold up my gaming PC and go.

I'm not really sure where to start looking though. The Razer Blade looked nice, but most reviews says the weak GPU doesn't justify the high price ($2800).

Bought some HP elite books the other day. Small machines but perfect for docking.
    Specs:
    LG660EA to LY524EA - HP Elitebook - 8560w -
    Intel Core i7-2670QM,
    1 x 4GB DDR3 1333MHz,
    500GB 7200rpm,
    DVD RW ,
    15.6 FHD(1920 x 1080) WVA+ CAM,
    GFX NVIDIA Quadro 1000M,
    Intel 802.11 b/g/n,

Strictly speaking the Quadro is a graphic workstation card, not a gaming card BUT my HP has an older Quadro card that still runs most of today's games at impressive rates.

The machines were R12,000 - R13,000. Sourced from iVolve.

Gaming laptop is a contradiction in terms.

A laptop will NEVER substitute a pc for gaming. Rather buy yourself a gaming pc and a cheap laptop for when you are on the move.

    How about this: Vodacom booklet

The Dell XPS for R799/pm. It looks great, 6GB ram, 750GB HDD, 1GB GPU.

Can never understand why in these threads about gaming laptops you get people who say get a pc when obviously he doesn't want one.
Personally haven't had a PC for about 5 years now, much prefer laptops.
Would go for Asus G75 or cheaper G55, the Asus ROG laptops are awesome machines.

If you want a sub R10k laptop that can play most games:
    Gigabyte Q1742N (Ivy Bridge i7 3610QM, Nvidia GT640M, 750GB HDD, 2x 4GB RAM, Win7 Pro x64, 2yr warranty)

If you want an awesome sub R17k laptop, then have a look at:
    Dell Inspiron N7720 (Ivy Bridge i7 3610, Nvidia GT650M, 2x 4GB RAM, 2x 750GB HDD + integrated 32GB SSD, 3D screen, Win7 Home Premium x64, 3yr warranty)

Personally, gaming laptops are too big & heavy to carry around the whole time and prone to be stolen.

For the same kind of money or less you can get double-tripple the framerate of these laptops when you go for a desktop gaming PC instead.
If you want an awesome gaming experience, then you'll love to play on a decent TV/27"+ size screen at a good framerate and high detail level.

lived666: have you ever played new games (eg. BF3) on an awesome screen (2560x1600) on ultra high detail level?! You can't do this on a sub R25k laptop.

Not sure if you get this in SA, but there's this Levono Y580 which has i7 3-something-QM, GTX660M, 6gigs ram going for about 12k overseas

Otherwise look for an affordable Alienware with SLI GTX675M (would be a b1tch to carry around though)
    Q8200/HD6850@850/1100/Kingston 8gig DDR1600/1TB Hitachi Cinemastar/24" LCD/500w 80plus Redstar - game the budget way...
