    Default Mourn With Me! :'(

My 2TB died today. My only condolence is it was not yet full. But I lost over a TB of movies and series. So sad.

The click of death greeted me this morning when I turned on my drive. ALAS poor drive I loved thee.

Oh well out with the old and in with the new.
What suggestions do you guys have for a cheap NAS or at least some sort of RAID solution?

Here's a basic MSI AMD E350 setup (excl hard drive) that would cost you R1,824 at Sybaritic:

Rouxenator suggested that case & CPU/motherboard. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with that cheap Thermaltake PSU! Here's a post with photos of his rig: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthre...=1#post8713615

This build competes very well with like an HP Microserver, seeing that they now cost you like R1750.
The HP Microserver does include a 250GB HDD, which costs like R600 brand new. The HP Microserver lacks 1080p hardware decoding support, which could set you back another R400 though.

So if you're going to be building a multimedia +NAS server with multiple 2TB+ drives, then this build would be cheaper than a HP Microserver.

This may be a wake up call for me to back up my photo albums onto a second drive. Music, movies, games and software are all replaceable.

I would cry myself to death if my external HDDs dies now, all that series and movies!!

Just hope they stay alive for the next 5 months till I start working, then i'll get myself a nice RAID system.

Losing series & movies is OK. Losing photos and documents is another thing!

Hard drives are relatively expensive, but not as expensive as doing data recovery OR the time to get everything back again.
So it is most definitely worth it to have an external drive at another location with your important data on it.

RAID is fine until your PC gets stolen...

That's why you have an off site secondary data storage site. At a secure and undisclosed location.
I think with my photo's I am going to have to take those to the cloud for safe keeping.

Nice specs pada I must defiantly look in to getting a setup like that.

Get a new drive and come get your "backup" from me. Just a note, all my movies are in HD.

Only 1tb of movies and series? Hehe. Still swimming in the shallow end. Try 18tb (well sorted). Running raid 6. Can't be too careful
