    Default PSU down?

I think my psu might've packed up.

My pc switches on but the fans only run at higher speeds and that is it. From my google searches it appears it could be the psu. Now I want go get a psu tomorrow but want to make sure it is adequate.

    Specs

    i5-2500k CPU
    8800GT GPU
    3 x HDD
    1 x DVD-RW

What would you recommend I look at for these specs?

That's a common symptom of a failed psu.

    Corsair, Antec.

500-600W will be plenty. Go for the 80+ high current ones.

I'm sure someone will be along to recommend exact models.

If you can afford R700, then look at the XFX ProSeries 550W PSU, which comes with a 5 year warranty.

It should be enough for any single (and most new dual) GPU graphics cards.

OK, couldn't get one of the above PSU's today and decided to get a cheapie just to test and see if it is the psu (and to get access to the docs on the hdd till next week when I can get a better psu) So got a Aerocool VP-550...same result, still only the fans that come on. Now I am back to square one.

Then when your power supply blew it took your mobo with it.

    Hate it when that happens.

Make sure that you connect both PSU connectors to your motherboard: the 20+4 pin one, as well as the 4+4 pin one!

    Yep, both are on.

I will try over the weekend to reseat everything and make sure everything is properly connected before sourcing a new MB

Also suggest disassembling and building the PC outside of the case. Good to do it on something softish (magazine or folded newspaper is fine) with your mobo's anti static bag below the mobo.

Rather not use the motherboard on an anti static bag. IIRC anti static bags conducts electricity to some extent!

Plugging out everything and then reassembling it is definitely a good start like PostmanPot suggested.

Just build it on the bed like I do

But I agree with the it most likely being a dead mobo.. Happened before to a friend, same symptoms.
See if you cannot find a friend to test with before buying a new mobo.

Although you might be able to claim warranty on it.
