Free Mail Server Software and setup

Hi all,

I am seriously thinking of setting up a personal Mail Server at home was wondering what free mail server software is available.

I am intending to use Ubuntu Linux (am a newbie @ Ubuntu) so the application has to be Linux compatible.

You guidance on the hardware and software as well as setup is appreciated.

I know this doesn't answer your question but have you considered Google Apps(Gmail)? I moved my company mail 2 years ago and haven't looked back since.

i was thinking the same thing but hosting it at a ISP.

Zimbra looks good.

So does Zarafa. Zarafa you can get with Zentyal which is basically a office server distro, so it will do all the work for you.

@ ponder: ClearOS looks pretty decent and I see Zarafa is going to be included soon. Have you used ClearOS before and if so what are the pros and cons?

No I have not (no need) but from what I have heard from others it's great. Lots of people use it for SMEs

ClearOS provides a stable function server with things like webmail, imap, pop, etc. Decent server for that.

I'm on the free version. The number of users has been reduced to 10 now, but was 50 when I signed up, so I still receive that benefit under the free version.

We were looking at Axigen a while ago... They have a free version for Windows, Linux, etc.

Clear OS is great if you are looking for other functions, but if you want a reliable email service, Google Apps is the Answer. I've setup several domains in google apps for email services and it just works. No Complains, No headaches, no hardware required. Just your devices to setups the accounts. And it works with everything.

Hi Zhsa..just a quick question on your Google Apps setup. Are you clients using outlook and what is the performance like seeing that the mail server is hosted internationally..Are they using IMAP or POP.

Any feedback would be appreciated as I am considering this as well. I have setup two test mail acounts with Apps but the imap performance isnt exactly great.
