Hey all

Just looking for some feedback on this build. Got a budget of R15k to get the pc and a screen. Dont need kb/mouse or any of that stuff. Based it around a strong Core i5 and a GTX660Ti

The only thing I want to change on there is to swap the motherboard for the MAXIMUS V GENE Z77 board rather than the one listed but they are out of stock until the end of next week.

Im usually a Samsung fan when it comes to monitors, although the LG IPS panel comes in at a really good price.

Lastly I have to decide on a case that doesn't push me too far over 15k.

Your input would be most appriciated :)

670 would be better due to increased memory bandwidth over the 660's 192.

Agreed I would rather also look at the 670 over the 660.

I Agree, 670 would be a better option.

Just pointing out, I see you have a 520W PSU included there, try for a 720W as it gives you more room for upgrade later on, SLI and the workz.

Enjoy the rig, hy lyk lekker.

Clearly you know nothing about supplies. That 520watt can outperform that 720 gigabyte odin you're talking about.

Very nice build. If it were me I'd get a cheaper board though and a 240gig SSD.

I'm guessing that the build will be used mainly for gaming ?
May I suggest the following changes:

If you need to save some cash for a 670 then I suggest you get 8GB of RAM rather than 16GB unless you really need the 16GB

Like these:
G.Skill 8GB
or
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (I'm using the Corsair, I did have to RMA one stick as it was faulty, but since I received my new one, PC has been working like a dream)

You can also get this motherboard which should land you up with enough money for a 670 if you choose to do that:
Gigabyte GA-Z77X UD3H - really good motherboard

If I added correctly, that will all come up to R10122
Case: Coolermaster CM690
Graphics: MSI 670 GTX
Total: R15155

Hope its helpfull

*edit*
Just noticed, how are you planning on cooling your CPU ?
saw that there was no cooling for it selected

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Ill do a bit more research on the 7950, I must admit though I am somewhat of an nVidia fanboy ever since the old driver issue ATI days. Didnt think I could afford to reach to the 670, but I am going to give that a go now too.

You right, mainly a gaming pc / photoshop machine.

PSU I was also dubious of the 520w, but the reviews sound good and I have run the rest of the rig through that calculator site and came out to 340w so there is some headroom there and I really dont plan on running SLI.

Forgot to put the fan on there, just thinking a simple Arctic Freezer i30 at R360 seems like a deal.

That Antec HCG is an awesome power supply. Don't listen to twats.

Recommend changing hard drive to this one: Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARX, 2TB/2000GB, SATA6G, with intellipower

Same price, but with 1 year extra warranty.

Also get a cheaper motherboard and a better graphics card. (670)

Have you had a look at this motherboard?

ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Performance, all-in-one LGA1155

Case suggestion: Cooler Master Trooper, Full Tower, Black, no PSU (bottom placed PSU design) - R1,594

MSI N670GTX-PM2D2GD5/OC, GTX670 OC, 2GB 256bit DDR5, SLI, PCI-E 3.0 (x16) - R4,363

You really do need to address issues like a tower, cooling (CPU and case), and whether or not you're planning on overclocking. I assume with you taking a 3570K that you're planning on doing it (you are paying for the multiplier and it being unlocked, after all).

Also, 16GB of RAM is overkill if you're gaming and not using some incredibly intense professional applications. Big time.

My case of choice: http://www.rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=29&products_id=7559
It's got amazing airflow and if you buy the right fans for it (I run a 200mm top fan, 2x 120 front 1x 120 side and rear). Depending on how you (or those you might live with) feel about noise, if you're willing to splurge I'd look at Noctua fans. They have like a 5 or 7 year warranty, are silent, and blow a massive CFM. CM makes a really solid and quiet 200mm top fan too. It's up to you, but if you are going to be overclocking as I assume you're going to want to spend on cooling.

As far as CPU coolers go, that's personal preference and some brand loyalty, but all high quality ones are also going to run you a decent amount of money. I'd say you might want to look at trimming back a bit so you don't need a ton of cooling, or saving for X amount of months in order to properly build this computer.

Edit:
Better specs (and 5 star rating with 1000+ reviews) over at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233&Tpk=haf 912

Also, as any board you're getting is almost certain to be running USB 3.0, you can typically find a 3.5" bay front port to add it. Alleviates spending more for a USB 3.0 front port case. Alternatively, an Antec 302 is a decent case and has USB 3.0 in front.

My recommendations:

Intel Core i5 3570K @ R2288
GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD3H @ R1916
G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 16GB @ R1102
KFA² Geforce GTX670 2GB GDDR5@ R4219
OCZ Vertex 4 128GB @ R1191
Samsung SH-S223C @ R176
Corsair GS700 @ R912
LG IPS235V-BN 23" @ R2008
Antec KÜHLER 920 H2O @ R1084
Total: R14,896

Beyond this, there's really not much incentive to buy anything more expensive. I'd recommend dropping the GPU and RAM for this HD7950 3GB and four of these DDR3 4GB modules. That nets you enough pocket change for a better SSD, namely the Agility 4 256GB model.
If you do go for the HD7950, don't upgrade its BIOS to the latest version for the Powertune enhancements, its just going to annoy you and limit your overclocking.

And do stick to the Corsair GS700. A better performing power supply is far more efficient at just under half capacity and the GS700 is remarkably efficient and great value for money.

Edit: As for chassis:
NZXT Phantom 410 USB 3.0 @ R1099
Antec Eleven Hundred @ R1112
Corsair Carbide 400R @ R846
Lian Li PC-6 @ R1076
Lian Li PC-7FN @ R1148

+1

8GB, 7950 or 670 and 256 SSD
You'll be good to go!

Ok, been going through all the suggestions and read up on the 7950 some more.

Here is the revised (read: mostly different) build

T5zXk.png

Gone to the cheaper Gigabyte motherboard as suggested, looks good, dropped down to 8gb ram. Upped to the corsair psu and changed the SSD.

Not prepared to get a WD hdd, every drive that has ever failed on me has been a WD.

I think this is pretty rounded now, best value I can get just squeaking under the 15k. I thought about dropping the screen for now to get a 670 but I dont think I can justify the cost, 7950 should do well for my gaming needs.
