R1/day day for in-flight broadband

for just R8-R10 a month, think I might just book a mango flight to try this out ;)
 
Pity the flight from Jhb to CT is too short to d/load a movie or two. R 1 a day is so cheap you wonder why they bother charging. I wonder when SAA will wake up. Probably not at all

Well, you have to fly on their plane. Tip: Take food along, and juice in a bottle. I flew once on an Aeroflot plane between Moscow and Sevastopol. As I was walking to the plane, my Russian friend told me there is no food on board, but don't worry, you will see. After we took off (a terrifying experience as the plane rattled and shook) and were level, all the people took out their garlic sausage, cold meat, vodka in abundance and walked around the aircraft handing out food to everyone, even guys in suits. We spent most of the 3 hours eating. There was a terrible mess and smell afterwards, with food and bottles all over the floor. Great fun. They were quite taken that a foreigner was on board their plane.

What's the limits and speeds like?

I could fly from CPT to Durban and back, downloading like crazy. If I can get 10GBs in the 3.5 hour journey then it will still work out half the price of Vodacom's 10GB data package.

I was on Turkmenistan airline last year. $20 for foreigners and $5 for locals per flight anywhere in Turkmenistan. i wonder why we did not get internet......lol
 
How is it done? Satellite?

Or have they got a server with a really mongo hard drive onboard, storing internet*.*? :D
 
You probably have to sign a 24 month contract at R30 pm. IE, R1 per day. Who knows.
 
Does this apply to cell phones that they force you to turn off regardless of "Flight-mode"?
 
I'm a little suspicious of the 98% uptime though, 98% is pretty shocking when compared to some of the worst 3G services around the place. Especially if the longest flight is only around 2h45min. Is the 98% evenly spread throughout the trip or or are they concentrated to when they take off and land?
 
As Mango is an SAA company, my tax money is keeping it in the air, so stuff 'em.
I will try it when Kulula provides the service.

Did the plane have propellers? On the way from Sevastopol to Tbilisi it was a propeller-driven plane. The trip took 8 hours and we didn't fly high since the cabin was not heated. You could see the fishing boats in the sea and the odd tanker. Still no food though, so I made sure the hotel packed lunch for me. They put 3 small bottles of vodka in amongst the sandwiches. It was just assumed that you would want to drink it. This was in 1979. The Soviet Union collapsed the next year. My friend (read minder) was laid low with food poisoning, but I think he just had too much to drink.
