No data caps below 50GB, says Rudi Jansen

Should have added that rolling windows have no place in a modern society.

The cost models, Jansen said, should be based on international norm, and not what the cellular companies claim their costs are.

Jansen further said that South Africa should get rid of all data caps below 50GB to ensure people can use the Internet with a fair amount of freedom.

So much win!

Don't know if this is off topic as it's not in the article - but I listened to his speech. While it was a very good speech, one part I disliked strongly is when he basically equated piracy to supporting criminals and also admitted that he's also done it before.

So I would just like to thank Rudi for helping the criminal who hijacked my mother in law by downloading that one movie/song for free. Oh wait...

Rudi for Vodacom CEO! Time to send frog-face Shameel packing!

Seriously, blah blah... Mweb 10GB account is R190 a month. So 50GB would be around R1k, which i more expensive than uncapped products.

I remember speaking to their market department some time back asking about high cap unshaped products and they said it would never happen. I don't need uncapped ATM, maybe when 3 in one is available, for now i would love a well priced 100GB totally unshaped account. That should cover any of my Game DL's, online gaming and other updates.

Right now the best deal is from Axxess - 50GB for R385. Double that cap for the same price, now there is an idea... ;)

Allowance of 1GB per day min./month @R250 over wireless networks, 3GB per day min./month @R150 over fixed line networks.Of course thumb-sucked.

Would be nice to have that cap as Min on mobile operaters as well.
Seeing that they are basically providing us with naked internet connectivity.. We dont get billed for the tellephone number we use for our 3G card, if there is no voice calls on it.

Now there is a thought.

3Gb per day @ R150/month unshaped with no rollover. Fixed line. Yeah baby, where do I sign?

That is all I need.

Nonsense, I have an MWEB uncapped account (R199/month) and downloaded 120GB in September alone. And I don't have to worry about tracking silly 'rolling windows' or other weird throttling schemes. Say what you want, MWEB actually puts their money where their mouth is.

So he spoke about 50GB minimum caps at Vodaworld. The Vodacom execs there must have been waiting for him to STFU and get off the stage. Vodacom sells 10MB data bundles. That's about 5000 times smaller than 50GB :)
