An ultrabook for R5,999 from SA's largest computer maker

It didnt look too bad from the pictre. I would like to know more and see some reviews of the ultrabooks and tablets in question

I'd rather pay a premium and get a proper 3 year NBD on site warranty and proper driver support 6 months down the line

All depends where they source components from. You can hear positive comments about Mustek JW6 on this forum.

I had a Mecer laptop once, everything is pure reference design from the manufacturers, so its pretty much an Intel notebook with a new shell. Drivers worked well, the shell was robust and I tortured the hell out of it. Honestly it was the longest I owned a laptop without destroying it. I still don't trust the brand since its Mustek :P but that's my experience with one of their notebooks.

I had a Mecer given to me once as a work laptop, absolutely despised the thing. The drivers were far from reference, I had to edit almost all of the standard drivers .inf files to get them to install.

I'm ok with their desktops as it's pretty much standard "cheap" bits in them. Laptop is a different story, say your laptop's board fries 3 years down the line just before the warranty expires I doubt they'll be able to source a new one and if they can it's going to take a few days. Dell you can just phone them up and a techie will rock up at your door the next morning to replace it.

I'd think one of those R3k laptops under the Acer, Lenovo & similar brands are a better bet than this.
Personally wouldn't buy Mustek / Mecer.

I don't know way there is such a hatred towards Mecer. The past 5 years we have been selling mecer products and we got very little comebacks. I still got a 32" panel more than 3 years now without any problems. My samsung went back 3 times before i got my money back. Mecer cheap stuff? think again.

Your welcome to buy your overpriced so called international brand names. Ill stay with mecer ty.

As a local company, they should offer 3 year warranties as standard. Similar to Sinotech (whatever it's called) TVs.

I know of a local production and events company (who puts the equipment they use for their gigs through hell) who swears by their tvs.

I am suspect of Mecer products. Probably just because they look carp.

I have owned a few Mecer LCD screens and they have all eventually died, while screens from other manufacturers are still going.

On Fri I grabbed a Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook for R8,500. Much better value if you ask me.
i7 Gen 3
8GB RAM
512/32GB HDD/SSD Hybrid
Windows 8

Love this thing. Small, sexy and fast.

Kinda intrigued by the number of positive Mercer comments in this thread...

Also Kan guy seems to approach things from an analytical angle, which is a pleasant change of pace from the usual marketing bullsht that CEOs tend to spout.

Ja but LCDs all peg sooner or later. More interested in when rather than whether.

e.g. My Samsung panel died like 2 months before warranty end. Planned planned obsolescence gone wrong I rate. Would prob buy Samsung again though tbh.

You missed the rest of that sentence where I mentioned screens from other manufacturers are still going.

That was a pretty shameless advertorial. Sad to see Goldstuck's price is so low :(

Also regarding their comment about using Intel motherboards, is this a recent development? The POS insurance replacement Mustek 'high end gaming PC' came with some OEM Pegatron board that hadn't even been completely configured (missing data from the system information) and it was missing an IDE port even though there were tracks and holes on the PCB for one.
